How to win DF2012... Thoughts?
« on: April 18, 2012, 11:16:11 am »

So I got to thinking, that one Guy was considered to have won 2010 because he made a mockery of HFS, removing the greatest threat to a fort, and living there.

So then, what would be the "win" condition for 2012? Seems to me it would be conquering one of the dust thrall embarks. Not just have it on 1 corner, but a full, self sufficient fort, with safe paths for migrants and traders, completely within a terrifying embark.

And then colonize HFS for bonus points.

That's my thought, but what do you think, forumites?

.. Lol, I expected you two right off the bat, but I expected more of a sciency response :p

... KodKod, do you change your avatar based on your mood? Sometimes it's "I'm gunna rip out your throat" Misery, other times its "you are so dead" Misery... Almost as bad as LW :p

Although the current one seems... Sad? Na, definitely a "you are so dead" :p

There is no science to winning.  Winning isn't fun.  Losing is fun.

Yes, I do change my avatar based on my moods. It is not random like Mr Whipsers. Unfortunately Misery only has three expressions. Fortunately I only have three moods.

You’ll get no sciency responses from me. ‼SCIENCE ‼ can only come from fun... goddamnit, and Ms Hat beat me to it.

Is that a MaSu logo on your avatar's shirt?

So you think you can "Win" Dwarf Fortress?

Hmm.. sounds like a reality tv show.

Any way..
You could do as you said,
make a fully self-sufficient fortress as a safe haven in the middle of a Terrifying biome.

Also.. Losing might be fun, but achieving an epic endeavour is even better.

I don't think dominating an evil biome is good enough, overtaking HFS is possible on any map that made it a decent win condition.

To quote ThatAussieGuy: "Losing may be fun, but winning is SATISFYING!"

I still think this is the best one: "Losing is still fun, but this time it is personal!"Edit: forgot that of my sigg.

To add on to the thrall embark, make a legendary combat dwarf and equip it in candy everything. Turn it into a thrall, wash the coating off of it and defeat it using your living dwarves. No traps or gimmicks, just pure dwarf combat. I remember reading it in another thread. Somebody accidentally had a legendary axelord become a thrall. It slaughtered the 249 living dwarves with ease.

I think in general that people have been declared to have 'won' the game if they were the first to achieve some epic feat.
Defeating hfs has become something anyone can do who can set up some dwarven checkers. If that is too hard, an artifact constructed in a field of MW steel or candy menacing spikes will decimate it enough to make it easier for your military.

So yeah, the feeling I got in the one or two instances someone was declared a winner was that it was a subjective thing of enough people going "woah, awesome" and offering up their socks in admiration.

Okay, how's this for 'winning' conditions for a DF Release;  You must confront and nullify the most deadly environmental aspects of that release.  They must be fully pacified in a way that they are no longer able to harm the dwarves in any way, shape or form.  If there is a random chance of it still harming them, it doesn't count.

On that note, for DF2012, you'd have to negate syndrome rain, build a safe fort in a cursed zone, and prevent syndrome clouds from being able to harm your dwarves at all.

Do not forget killing a dust thrall swarm with the military before de-weaponizing the world.

Edit: Discussing de-weaponization of the world. We are on Bay12 dammit! What have we done?!
