Short of allowing the game to selectively burn unworthy players by shooting magma out of the hard drive, I think Toady has already done everything in his power to ensure DF is noobproof.

The golden goose of masterwork lays golden bars instead of eggs. Normal geese have a very small chance of hatching into a golden goose from their eggs.

You should be able to look at the guides & readmes folder, and there's a pet guide in there explaining some of the new animals. If you don't have the latest version that he added said picture in, I'll post it here below.
