Flooding Trade Depot Chamber

How can I flood this room to get rid of pesky elven traders? (imgur screwed up the image, everything to see is there though)

You have a river, and a nearby room you want to flood. The game lets you dig tunnels, and install floodgates. What part of this is giving you trouble?

Where the red square is a floodgate, the crosses are fortifications and the triangles are grates that lead underground into either a 20x20 chamber for drying, the caverns, or an aquifer.

Link the floodgate to a lever first, then construct the fortifications, then a z level above where the river is joined to the fortification >>, channel ONE square > of the fortification to release the water.

All you need is two screw pumps, a way to close the depot's entry (you visibly have one), a room full of water next to the depot and your analytical ability.

At least that's what I used it to make depot drowning traps. Now I don't, because killing the elves is easy enough with military, killing your own race is monstruous and killing the humans is generally not worth it.

Pumps would do it faster, but powering them will either require a lot of construction or dwarven labour. As for how to not drown your miner, channel out the last tile from above instead of mining it. Then you can finish the tunnel with the floodgate closed and nobody in it.

Well when you dig it all out and install the floodgate, don't release the water, but when you're ready to, go a Z level ABOVE the tile that's holding the water in, and channel it!

Or just place a normal door. Lets you dig on the same level too. Dwarf breaches river, water floods in, miner runs out, door closes behind him and a mechanic calmly links the door to a lever to complete the task.

Well.. yeah but then someone has to deconstruct the door for it to actually be a 'drowning chamber'

Or just link the door to a lever.

And pull it.

Dwarves can't open and shut doors that have been linked to a lever unless they actually pull the lever. That doesn't help the miner.

Everything I said is done in that order. By the time you link the door to the lever, the miner is long drunk and on the other (drier) side of the door

...Or instead of trying to use 'timing' and 'luck' you could just channel the tile above ._.

STOP MAKING IT COMPLICATED FOR HIM.

It's not a timing exercise. You leave the door unlinked. The miner leaves the tunnel through the ordinary, mundane door. The door stops the water. THEN you link the door to a lever, while the tunnel is already full of water and has nobody in it.

Dig from one level above since it's a river.
