I like above ground forts. Rarely use traps at all, heavily reliant on excessive military control and migrant screening (despite not actually embarking on maps with metals, though I think I might have some copper), as a result I try to secure as much land as possible without making it too easy for invaders to just swamp their way in (it's a work in progress), and I love irregular, IRREGULAR layouts. Quite literally wherever I feel like plonking something down, I begin building. There is no central rampway/staircase, everything is a network of passages. Also everyone has a grand bedroom, because screw you mayor.

You do know that dwarfs move a lot faster diagonally than horizontally or vertically?

You do know that they don't? Diagonal takes longer.
