Improving Kennels
« on: April 17, 2012, 12:57:35 am »

With the recent changes in animal training... the kennels have much less usage by players.   My suggestion is having this building serve two new purposes which would greatly increase their gameplay usage:
1) Kennels could be the location where "Animal Caretakers" heal and feed wounded animals.
2) Kennels could be the location where "Animal Caretakers" place animal armor on animals.  (And someday even saddles)

These changes would return value for the animal caretakers skill and the kennel building.

I'm not sure how useful armor will be without armor user skills. I guess it can't hurt though.

Armor User doesn't really do anything besides make armor not slow you down as much.  And armor does a tremendous deal for turning minor wounds that can become crippling into not wounds at all. Without armor, 3 hoary marmots can kill an elephant

If you could give war dogs armor, it would significantly improve their odds of survival.  If war dogs could have improved bite mechanics, they could actually deal some damage.

Of course, there would also need to be mechanics in place to actually make armor sized for all those different creatures.

Great ideas, but I would re-name them something other then Kennels if theyre lore and purpose were going to be broader then training war dogs, beasts

As far as the item, just create several paces of barding, small, large, gigantic. And give them head and torso coverage. Now that I think a bit about it you might be able to mod this in with the way kennels are, I know you can mod in new workshops and reactions. So the trick would just be getting the barding on the animals =) as they would need some tag for intelligence/item user as it stands. Maybe theres a reaction that could give that to them for a few ticks while they equip the armor, then take it away as a hack. I'm thinking some kind of syndrome reaction thing, like the ones used to heal wounded dwarves.

Armor User doesn't really do anything besides make armor not slow you down as much.

I didn't know this. I had assumed that armor user was part of the reason my dwarfs take fewer injuries over time. I guess they are just dodging and blocking more than I think (and the stat improvements from mastering this skill can't hurt).

armor does a tremendous deal for turning minor wounds that can become crippling into not wounds at all

Yes, my guard dogs would have little reason to fear kobolds anymore, which is great, I'm less sure it means a real change to combat. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind stacking the deck in my favor but even a very well armored dwarf with no skills doesn't stand a chance against a moderately skilled opponent, I'm not sure that an armored animal is going to fare better, except against other animals.

If you could give war dogs armor, it would significantly improve their odds of survival.  If war dogs could have improved bite mechanics, they could actually deal some damage.

I'm not sure that armor is the solution to under powered or unrealistic animals. Properly constructed animal mechanics/raws/materials is a real solution and effectively gives several animals armor as well as better weapons.

I very much believe that if kennels (or whatever they should be called) are retained they should be where these jobs take place. I just don't think animal armor should be pushed as a fix for animals. That seems like a different matter.

War animals currently have the most use against other animals - for example I had a very strong FB monitor lizard too busy choking out a dog to resist being chopped to pieces by a newbie axeman.
