So I constructed a mildly effective squad of hammerdwarves, because hammers are fucking sexy.
Lo and behold, The forgotten beast Kor the Sling of Eviscerator, a giant sparrow with no eyelids and poison spittle, arose.
I sent my dwarves to deal with it figuring it would create at least one hero.
I was wrong.

They all survived much to my surprise.
As they hit ground in the cave a squad of trolls 7 strong showed up.
They were immediately slaughtered, and then my dwarves rolled right over said forgotten beast as well without any problems.
So I was a lil shocked, and I checked the combat log.

Not a single one of the bastards used their hammers.
Not even my captain, who was weilding an artifact Silver and Emerald warhammer.

They all punched them to death. 10 dwarves versus 7 trolls, and a FB.
And they only used fists.

Needless to say, they will be buried in my gilded hall of heroes when Armok demands their presence.

Just checked again. Turns out the one dwarf I put in charge of teaching was a Legendary +5 Fighter. <===MFW

A truly epic tale. Not sure why they wouldn't have used their hammers, though. I don't even have any ideas as to why.

I have had weird things like that happen when they don't have shields on occasion, but normally their hands just get cut off then and they become stumpies.

I believe dwarves prefer to use their highest combat skill.  Presumably, due to some peculiarity in your training regimen, their wrestler/striker skill is higher then their hammer skill.

Update, sadly my fortress succumbed to a nasty tantrum spiral.
The mayor took a goblin bolt to the face and the captain with her artifact hammer berserked.
Took out the goblin seige....then ran inside the fort and slaughtered all of my farmers, my metalworkers, and my only brewers....
It was bad.

Abandoned fortress.

On the bright side, I found the perfect embark.
Lots of iron and flux, plenty of candy, and its perfectly flat, heavily forested, with an open, ground level caldera full of 777

Any chance of worldgen params for that world? Sounds like a very nifty embark.

If there is I want them. I've only goetten a caldera0type volcano once, and I deleted the save by mistake. I had so much gold and silver I had to mod the damn raws so i could make weapons and armor out of them cause I had almost nothing else.

The bitch ran off pure Bling of War.

And so far, no silver, only gold and iron.

Tried to mod in elbow and knee strikes, failed miserably.

@Broseph, that would have been cool, but as it stands they make decent wrestlers, biters, and kickers lol ) I was just trying to be cool and point out that your firsts are not your only weapon available )

With the new syndrome interactions you could probably make some kind of overpowered and cheesy Dim Mak moves that kill opponents in 12 steps now lol.... dwarfen monks ho! Or give it to some kind of other race. Another neat feature would be stun that paralyze by using pressure points (think solar plexus).

But the whole world of freeky combat moves will open up when the magic system goes in, you can make Jedi dwarves with force choke, push, and lightening then lol.

DBZ style kamayamaya ... omg... =/ my brain is starting to hurt now.
