For an honest answer:

He demands high quality apartments.

He also makes you feel warm inside

Kingly duties include but are not limited to:
-Exploiting the workers
-Hanging on to outdated imperialist dogma
-Perpetuating the economic and social differences in your society
-Violently oppressing peasants
-Seeking the Holy Grail shrubbery.

The demands can be a real challenge. On the other hand, so is designing beautiful, magma-safe royal apartments.

According to the long-term dev goals, kings/queen will let you have control over the whole of the kingdom in some limited fashion. 

Those are long-term goals that do not exist yet.

Basically, he/she is just a useless figurehead (Insert English Royalty joke here) that is just one more noble to house and feed at this point, but they're also a marker of having actually accomplished making a decent fortress.  A trophy of sorts.
