I'm relatively new to DF, currently on my third fort. Frankly I love it, but I'd like to try my hand at some megaprojects before this next update comes out and I abandon my current fort. Is there a way to edit dwarf attributes? I'd like to "procure" some Legendary Miners to make my life easier.

Also, is there a way to stop migrants? I'd like to see if I can make a fort survive with only the starting 7 dwarves. (Is the fact that you get 7 starting dwarves meant to be a Snow White reference?)

And lastly, is there a way to force two dwarves to attack each other? I'd like to do some "coliseum" megabuilds and pit my dwarves against one another in gloriously dwarfy combat.

To quote a book I read:

"When Professional players say they give 110%, this is the 10%!"

It was a book about cheating in sports, by the way.

But if you want to quick make some miners, Runesmith allows you to change attributes, skills, flags, all that good stuff.

Unless I'm very much mistaken soldiers armed with picks in danger rooms quickly become legendary miners. Also mining sand or soil trains miners quite quickly.

I think runesmith hasn't been updated for 2012 yet....

Miners are arguably the easiest profession to get to Legendary without any sort of mods/cheats/exploits. Soil layers are key.

I usually have a trio of Legendary Miners by the end of my first year.

Erm... Dig. Unless you want hundreds of legendary miners, it's the easiest way.

get some embark with a lot of clay or soil, or both. have your miners dig, in the first few waves, make as many useless professions miners as picks you can make. boom.

Still possible in vanilla. Set up your peasants in 3 man squads, set to spar all year (2) with picks.

Ta da!

Also sparring is the way you want to get the Dwarves to fight against each other, unless you want to try make them berserk. And sparring isn't lethal unless you do it over a bridge, spanning over *quite* a steep drop.

I was wondering if there was a way to temporarily adjust a dwarf's civilization or whatnot that would make him hostile to other dwarves, something that could be changed when I have them in the "arena". This would require memory-editing, as would the mining change. I was just hoping there was an existing tool that could accomplish that. It seems Runesmith would have been a good option, but alas it has not been updated.

What about disabling new immigrants?

Accomplishable in vanilla as well! All you need is a merchant caravan from your own civ. Voila! You have a loyalty cascade waiting to happen. I also recommend that you do not allow your arena Dwarves to mingle with the general populace after this.

Basically:
Step 1: Acquire merchants
Step 2: Order Dwarf to kill (sane) merchant
Step 3: Arena
Step 4: ? ? ??
Step 4: Job done (again)

What about disabling new immigrants?

Go to the folder (data) (init) (d_init) and change the population_cap to nought. Though the first two migrant waves are hard coded, you'll get them regardless.

^this. And if you're really that set on only having the 7, lock migrants in a room. Long as you don't somehow get a family member of the 7 (even possible?), then no one will care when they die...

Just make sure you bury them :p

Snow White... Hehe, thought that, too.

1. Get dwarves.
2. Maek/buy picks.
3. Get digging.

They'll become legendary eventually and even training a hundred from dabbling still leaves you with MASSIVE piles of stone.

Is the fact that you get 7 starting dwarves meant to be a Snow White reference?

Coincidentally, in Tolkien's fiction their are seven original dwarfs.

Had to double-take there for a moment: "Thought Bilbo was the 13th party member...oh...right -original- dwarves."

The Silmarillion is a bit harder to remember all of when compared to The Hobbit or LOTR.
