Neatest Things you've Noticed Recently
« on: April 15, 2012, 08:54:28 pm »

I noticed a pump-operator-in-training sheepishly sneak off to the meeting hall rather than continue pumping after his first few pumps caused him so be swept into a murky pool.

Did you notice anything interesting that happened as you were playing DF today?

My axelord, somehow, made a whole goblin siege dissapeared, and then it started raining blood and my river was entirely red with lots of goblin guts  :D

I dug  a fishing pond out down at the bottom of my map, filled it with water.  There's no fish there, but I noticed a dwarf fishing with two children.

They were his sons.  Urist McMiner was taking his sons on a fishing trip.

Now, thats just adorable. I can just see the little guys dangling there beard in the water to attract fish.

I had a dwarf have a strange mood and make a harp with an image of the artifact shield her husband wielded on it.  I know some of these things the game really does do on purpose (like having images of a dwarf surrounded by things he/she hates), but I don't think that sort of thing is coded into the game.

Sometimes the RNG really just does hit the mark.  Or the game knows more than it lets on...

I agree with the theory that DF will be--or is--the first self-aware AI. Personally, it would be kinda cool to see a robot uprising lead by DF...

I wouldn't be surprised if engravings are designed to be more about the engraver's family and experiences.

Eh, if DF is the first self-aware AI, all we need is socks to defend ourselves. And closed doors.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins besiegers above your head? The rain of dead ravens as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

If you make a fortress in the middle of a island (you know, just dig moats), you just need to install a crapload of cage traps around the bridges to deal with sieges. You only have to deal with flying invaders which can be dispatched easily with archer towers. That's the neatest thing I've noticed recently.

I noticed that it is stupidly easy to meet the architecture requirement to become the capitol.

And if you OMIT the bridges, the immigrants will stay at the edge of the map and the siegers can kill THEM.

On an unrelated note, I discovered that floodgates can be used to make a trade depot inside the castle accessible to merchants, and inaccessible to kobolds. Thought that was neat, especially after one of the little buggers chopped off the doctor's hand (he couldn't fix it).

Generally, when one is conducting an experiment, it is worth noting that the observers went insane, killed each other, and then rose from the dead.
It's like DF inhaled a peanut.
