Combat "Stances to military"
« on: April 15, 2012, 06:57:02 pm »

Foreword: I have no idea if someone have mentioned this yet, but:

It would be really could cool to kinda tell your dorfs to defend certain place, and chase enemy with X tiles of radius, or to attack everything on sight, etc. Its really annoying when you tell your axedorf to move to a place then it ends on another one.

I think Toady needs to fix all the combat issues (this makes the game almost unplayble).

Something along these lines are planned, but for now the best there is is "station" where the troops will chase the enemy/anything the fort percieves as hostile including bunnies a distance before returning to thier post unless engaged/grappled in some way.

Part of the issue is that dwarven soldiers seem to be hardcore bloodknights with an instinctive need to kill things if they're told they are going to be doing so. (AKA the issue where they charge to thier dooms is pretty much a messed up quirk of the AI until it is improved. But it's a long ways away.)

...isn't that kind of in line with the Dwarven psychology?
Your average dorf has seventy-eleven different issues that he's going to take out on neighbours, their little dog and a metalsmith's forge unless he gets to take joy in slaughter otherwise. (OR slept in a really nice «☼bed☼» lately, but that's neither here nor there...)

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

(response to spammer removed_

More control over the military orders would make life a lot easier.. I wouldn't be surprised if this is planned for the army arc though, so all we got to do is wait. Wait some more.. and maybe after a bit more wait.. we'll have it! Give or take a few years.

Seriously though, kudos to Toady, he puts enormous efforts into this..

Have you tried using burrows and assigning your dwarves to guard those? I think they're a bit more focused on staying put in that case.. though I'm not entirely sure.. And it's perhaps nothing you do "on the fly". But then again, is there anything in the game you do that with?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I would like more control over the little buggers, but they shoud usually be willing to run off to kill something if they haven't been ordered to do so yet. Their exact behaviour should depend on their personality, of course.

The only fixes the military needs, IMO, are an easier interface to assign dwarves to squads and an easier way to assign them equipment.  Yes, they fight like crazy drunken idiots, that's because they ARE crazy drunken idiots.

I'm actually not sure if it does already.. but I'd want the Leader+strategist skill of the group captain to affect how well the dwarves follow the orders, and of course a personality check for both sides as to how well that is applied. So a bad leader would pretty much lead to a chaotic mayhem of axe tornadoes.. and a good one would make fancy rows of highly disciplined legionaries that hits anything with unified and horrific force. That would take quite a leader to accomplish though..

AT least if that could be implemented, the leader skill would have more use.
