Video Game Music V2
« on: April 14, 2012, 09:46:41 pm »

Since the other video game music thread is from 2010, I've decided to just go ahead and make a new one. It doesn't seem like necroing would hurt, since it wasn't a very time-sensitive topic, but tastes change and this seems like a safe bet. Also seems like a good chance to start fresh and cover great new tracks from 2011 and 2012.

Let's talk about great video game music and share youtube links! It'd be great to have more specific tracks to share rather than just giving a whole game OST for us to check out.

I'll kick it off with Skullgirls. I was futzing around the menu, and decided to view the credits, only to be greeted with an amazing song:

That's a pretty neat tune.

For me I'll throw in pretty much anything from Ys: The Oath in Felghana.
Especially Valestein Castle, Illburns Ruins, and A Searing Struggle.

For a while I replaced the combat music in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion with the Felghana soundtrack. Made every battle much more exciting.

Skullgirls OST - In Just A Moments Time (Credits)
I usually hate lyrics in songs from video games but this is lovely

Guess I'll post a few of my favorites from Edmund McMillen Games
The Sewers Under Dross from Gish
Devil N Bass and Hot Damned from Super Meat Boy
Greed and Sacrificial from The Binding of Isaac

Wait, I didn't post in that thread? There must have been another one sometime too. Anyhow,

Chrono Cross, Jet Force Gemini, and Megaman 2 are probably my favourite VG OSTs of all time. Pure nostalgiasm every time I hear any one of these.

Lunar Eternal Blue: Foot steps of a decisive battle
Valkyrie Profile: Turn over a new leaf
Lunar Silver Star Harmony: Wings (Has Lyrics)
Chrono Cross: Time of the Dreamwatch
Chrono Trigger: To far away times

Chrono Cross
What was the start of all this?  When did the cogs of fate begin to turn? Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now, from deep within the flow of time. But, for a certainty back then, we loved so many, yet hated so much. We hurt others, and were hurt ourselves. And still we ran like the wind, whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies.

I must say, this one is classy.

Mysterious Receipe (with Lyrics/Ending Credits) from Atelier Rorona and Peaceful Ruins and Crystal Waltz from Atelier Totori.

I don't have many tracks from recent games but here are some of my old favorites:

Fight with Seymour from Final Fantasy X.

Crush from Command and Conquer: Red Alert

Concensus and Under the Progress from Parasite Eve.  I think the entire 2nd disc was pretty awesome.

Opening Theme (Lyrics) to Suikoden III was also a track with lasting impact for me.

These two:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EaRHlo4B0Y&feature=related: Assassin's Creed 2 - Venice Rooftops
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0i6YFrSs6c: Assassin's Creed 2 - Ezio's Family

Listen to them! Now, listen to them together... make sure both songs play the first note at the same time, and make sure Ezio's family is twice as loud as Venice Rooftops for good balance. My mind... has been blown...

EDIT: For a hint, after 7 seconds in each song a new section or "phrase" starts. At this point, two chords are played, one from the piano and one from the guitar. If they sound out (and it is very easy to tell once you hear it) then try again until it sounds together. The closer together, the better.

Just about everything that Falcom composes is awesome. Take Silver Will, for example.

If Falcom isn't known for their RPGs, then they're known for their music.

I love Falcom, the music in their games is always amazing.

Some other action songs that come to mind would be;
Bullet Dance from Blazblue
Rock'n Rocks from Soul Nomad
Mechanical Rhythm from Xenoblade Chronicles
And my favorite RPG battle theme, Fury Sparks from Tales of Vesperia
