Age of Mythology
« on: April 14, 2012, 04:49:36 pm »

Age of Mythology is a fairly old RTS from Ensemble Studios, the creators of Age of Empires. I just reinstalled it a few days ago and I'm not only having huge amounts of nostalgia for my childhood cheating years, but having a blast beating the game legitimately for the first time. Anybody else have this game/enjoy it a lot?

Heheh, I have it in my disk drive right now. I like to say my best god(dess) is Isis, but then I get owned when I do anything besides Loki.

I was sad that everytime I found the expansion pack in a store it was packaged as the special edition set with the original.

I went Loki > Forseti (healing springs ftw) > Bragi (those boars and a bunch of infantry upgrades) > Hel (Nidhogg and all 3 giants).
Then I spam ballistae and jarls everywhere.

My favorite unit I still question its usefulness of. I know that it is the strongest unit in the game but given you have to use a whole miracle just to get it...

I love the Demigod (Super Pharoh) and its chain lightning goodness.

Also Age of Mythology is too complicated for mass consumption. It needs to be simplified. How about we remove half the gods. Take out the Egyptians... and make the Norse more like the Greek. PERFECT! Now of course combat isn't simple enough we need it to be even MORE rock, paper, siscor then it was before.

Love the game to death, one of the rare boxed originals I own. Played a bunch of it a while back with some buddies. Egyptians are my favourite, Isis especially, statues for all and Phoenixes to roast all the non-desert people.

Plus anubites are the most awesome looking unit, ever!

And the most broken strategy I've found was used by a friend, spam throwing axemen and boars, win game with a mid game rush of a giantass blob of death. And if it's a water map then it's just Elvers everywhere!

(still some extreme sneaky managed to win me that one, nothing beats a titan gate being sneaked onto someones island :D

Yep. As a new player (with zero multiplayer experience yet) I just sort of make sure I have Heroes, myth units, archers, infantry and cavalry in my army, and siege units if I remember. The mix is okay versus everything, and balances out my resource consumption okay, but is overall inefficient in any context but the campaign.

I did the same a few months ago. Had a blast.

I just love starting with Zeus and going for Minotaur spam.

I love this game. Seeing this thread made me go and play it again.

My favorite god is probably Loki, getting free myth units mid-battle is always good.

the one I always worshipped was gaia, but failing the ability to be atlantis, I worshipped one of the greek gods. I failed at the other two cultures.

Which is more then possible. Age of Mythology is one of the few games back then where the different factions can play dramatically different from eachother. Even to the extent where basic strategies can differ (Norse especially)
