Okay... now that you mentioned raiding:

1.Go to Lemma
2.Wait a turn for baddies
3.Start raiding
4.?!?
5.Profit?

Sounds good.

Here's a tip though. I don't know if you've done any raiding in your gameplay, but raiders don't need to physically be in the system they're raiding. A ship set to the raid command will raid any non-friendly system in the 8 sectors around it, though I think you need to have visited the system at least once to raid.

Therefore, if we explore the third system in Romulan territory and then raid from a sector adjacent to all 3 of their systems, we can get twice the money with the same ships. That's why I suggested the system just "below" the big fleet we've been watching, it's in range of all 3 of their systems for raiding purposes.

More money is good, especially as we bribe the Zakdorns.

Does that carry any kind of morale penalty? Raiding doesn't seem very Federation-like.

Raiding doesn't give morale penalty/boost.

Turn 96 Addendum

I'm sending the Zakdorn the first of three major bribes. Let's have a moment of silence for our treasury while we still have something in it.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Turn 97

The Ferengi refused yet another non-aggression treaty. I'm beginning to wonder whether they might dislike us. On a related note I'm sending a second bribe to the Zakdorn, and we're waiting to hear back from the Selay about our affiliation.

Production-wise, Mintaka completed the first destroyer in our newest battle fleet: the USS Nautilus A. This fleet is available to be claimed. Also Malurian managed to build our wind turbines, this is nice.

Turn 98

This first contact was peaceful, if not very friendly. The Antedeans don't seem to like anyone at all...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Selay accepted our offer of affiliation, while the Zakdorn will have to wait a turn to receive the remainder of our treasury. We can't afford the size of the final remaining bribe for another turn.

Turn 99

Well this seems a little strange...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I guess the Ktarians aren't going to take the Romulan's shit anymore. To be honest I wasn't aware the Romulans were giving them shit. But it's nice to know where they stand towards one of our most dangerous neighbors. On a related note, the Talarians have offered us an affiliation. I'm happily accepting.

The final ship of the First Destroyer Fleet has completed in Trill: the USS Majestic A.
The impending affiliation with the Talarians has prompted me to build another scout ship in Trill before we begin construction of the Research Committee.

With the completion of the First Destroyer Fleet, we are now moving into Romulan territory to scout and raid their systems and to destroy any ships we encounter. Also the Sandhusky scouted the Borka system, it's fairly uninteresting.

Turn 100

The Sandhusky continues to find success in its directive to seek out new life.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Most of the minor races we've encountered have met either the Romulans, the Ferengi, or both. When we asked the Takarans about these two they told us they already had an affiliation with a group called the Cardassians. This is the first we have heard of this empire, and we know nothing about them. Speaking of diplomacy, we're finally sending the Zakdorn an affiliation treaty. Hopefully our generous bribes will pay off.

We've had a busy turn production-wise. The USS Miranda A completed in Mintaka, Betazed completed a farm upgrade, Sol built a plasma reactor, and a factory finished in Catullan.

Oh and one more thing...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I noticed the bulk of the Romulan fleet left the system it was in, I think they destroyed a Talarian warship. This seems an ideal time to do some aggressive scouting of their main system.

Turn 101

Now for the result you've all been waiting for...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We also got into a bit of a scrape in the Romulus system.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We're pulling back the fleets a little this turn to ensure the safe passage of our newest scout ship through Romulan territory. The USS Cortes A finished in Trill this turn. Trill will delay the Research Committee yet again to construct a set of Federation Replicators.

Personal Note
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Turn 102

We encountered the support ships that fled during the battle over Romulus. Their temporary escort of 2 scout ships fled, as did one troop transport. Our fleets claimed a colony ship and another troop transport. As far as I can tell we've taken the Romulan fleet down to 3 destroyers, 2 scouts, and some assorted support ships.

Also the Talarian warship mysteriously reappeared with a lot of hull damage. Glad to see they're ok. Speaking of friends, the Zakdorn signed our affiliation treaty. So that lays to rest any worries we had about their friendship with the Ferengi.

For Reals

Oooh, good. I was worried how we'd do in battle as the cloak's first strike gives the romulans a huge advantage. How's my system doing now? Did those wind farms take or are we going to have to do something else for power or focus now that we had those disasters?

Have they ever explained what Latinum is exactly?

I know the basics... but I am under the impression that Latinum is used for nothing but trade.

From what I understand, it's valuable because it cannot be replicated like pretty much any other element/compound. Therefore, it has real scarcity.

Yeah I get that basic. It cannot be replicated and they collect it from nebulas.

But what is it used for? Is it purely scarcity factor like how Diamonds will probably still be more popular then perfected manifactured diamonds inspite of being supperior in everyway?

That's pretty much it, though at least diamonds have some practical use. Latinum is more like poker chips; worthless except to the people who want it.

Better yet one of the reasons why they gold press latinum is because it is toxic (Possibly radioactive)

So it will kill you too

Though apperantly the Latinum economy eventually hit Starfleet to the extent that replicator rations have become a commodity (and even Starfleet has entered the latinum economy)... All part of the series general slide towards Starfleet's/federation's degredation.

But that is no where close to this timeline.

* Haspen hi-fives Sirus!

And we lost no ship to enemy fire! Let's begin raiding, but I won't have anything against chasing down support ships if Ivan wants to ;P

To answer a few questions:

Jarod Cain: Cloaked Romulan ships get a free turn in tactical combat while our own ships just sit there and take it. In the event there is a blend of cloaked and uncloaked ships, such as destroyers + troop transports, if the destroyers are cloaked then our ships can move on turn 1, but they can only target the visible troop transports. As a result, the Romulans frequently lose a lot of support ships. As it was, the ships in the big battle weren't cloaked when we fought. I think it had something to do with catching them out of position the turn before.
Also, yes the wind turbines took. Not sure why. The dilithium refinery is almost done in Malurian, and so the turbines will power both it and the trade center for a while. Now that the Federation replicators are available, we can build them and private farms to feed our entire population off of energy-using buildings.
P.S. Officially those weren't disasters. Malurian is the only system to be positively effected by random events. Twice!

Neonivek: Yeah basically. You and Sirus pretty much explained this one. Fun fact: Morn's hair fell out as a result of having all that latinum in his second stomach. I guess it's toxic but not that toxic.

Haspen: I won't send your destroyers colony ship hunting. At the moment they're escorting the Cortes because it would most certainly get destroyed by what's left of the Romulan fleet. My current plan is to follow the Cortes until it's safe, at some point visit the third Romulan system, then park over Romulus with the raid command on. At that point, the Romulan fleet will have to come to us. Once most of their combat ships are dead I'll probably send Sirus's fleet off to kill colony ships since you don't want to.

And if the Romulans declare war, then let the Senate look to their bunkers.
