I'm alright with terrorforming duty.  Beware, native fauna, for we shall crush your sprit until you loyally serve the federation, ha ha ha!   :P

Sillyness aside, temporary terraforming duty opens up the possibility of Betazed's shipyard coming online prior to my selection of system, if only slightly.

Could you brief me on Durenia and Catullan?  I'm having trouble opening up some of the pictures (load times must be killing my computer or something).

I'm leaning towards Catullan, just because it seems to be closer to the front, whereas Durenia is in our back corner and can be backfilled later.

EDIT: Ok, Catullan has dillithium.  Dwarves like mineral wealth!  I've decided that Catullan will be our destination, could you tell me what planets are in the system?  I'd like to pick which planet will become EuchreJackopolis.   ;D

Catullan it is then. Just so you know, Durenia has a larger maximum population but unimportant mineral wealth (no dilithium) and a strategically meaningless location.

Also I fully intend to build another colony ship as soon as I can, so it will get colonized soon anyway.

In terms of the Catullan system:
Catuallan I is a volcanic planet with 25 maximum population. It contributes 0.1% to the system population growth rate and contributes a 50% energy bonus.
Catullan II is a desert planet, also with 25 maximum population and 0.1% growth rate.
Catullan III is a polar planet, with a maximum of 35 and a growth rate of 0.1%.

Therefore the maximum population and growth rate for the system is 85 and 0.3%.

For comparison, Durenia II is a large desert planet with a maximum population of 80, a growth rate of 0.8%, and contributes a +75% energy bonus to the system. By itself it's just as good as the entire Catullan system save the dilithium. There are two more habitable planets in the Durenia system which bring the maximum population for the system to 150.

Catullan is also notable for being part of the infamous "space hippies" episode from the original series.  :P

There has been a family emergency, and I'm going to have to put this LP on hiatus until Monday or so.

Here's a quick post before I leave town. Expect no further posting until Monday or Tuesday.

Turn 32

The Rica, now under the command of admiral EuchreJack, arrived at Malurain and has begun terraforming the third planet in the system.

Turn 33

No new events. The Martynov has reached the edge of its range near the Deneb system and will begin exploring the sectors nearby.

Turn 34

The Rica completed terraforming operations on Malurain III and has begun terraforming Malurian I.

Turn 35

The Martynov had a look inside the nebula we found a while back. Despite interfering with sensors it's an otherwise harmless astrological body.

Turn 36

Malurian completed a third automated farm. The maximum food production in the system is now 80, I'm going to stop building farms now and complete our food production by building an aquaculture center when we're getting closer to 80 population. For now it's more factories.

The Martynov continues exploring empty space...

Turn 37

We've finally completed terraforming all the habitable planets in the Malurian system. Now the population can grow to its maximum. We're sending the Rica to terraform the planets in the Mintaka system for lack of a better task for it to do.

Back on Sol, our automated farm upgrade has completed. We're scrapping 2 farms that are now extraneous. I'm ordering the construction of another colony ship while we await completion of our construction research. We should be well prepared for when we can reach new colonies.

I'll just let you know when the Martynov finds or does anything interesting at all.

Turn 38

No significant events, Malurian reached 40 population this turn.

Turn 39

The Rica arrived at the Mintaka system, we've begun terraforming the second planet in the system. This is a very large jungle planet, and will take some time to complete.

Turn 40

No significant events. The Martynov is almost done charting the space along the Ferengi border, additional exploration will continue toward the north near Betazed.

Turn 41

No significant events, in fact the game summary says "no events". I've decided to send another offer of friendship to the Selay, perhaps they're in a more friendly mood.

Turn 42

The Martynov picked up another Ferengi ship, or rather the same ship as before in a different place.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's still out of our range, but it does tell us a little more about the location of the Ferengi Alliance. Perhaps we'll finally meet them soon.

Back on Sol, we've completed the construction of another colony ship. The USS Smith A. It's been sent to Mintaka to assist in terraforming operations. The Sol system is now upgrading its databanks, this will be a fast build due to only having one structure.

Turn 43

Contact!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Ferengi Alliance is only interested in trade, it would appear. Whether this is true remains to be seen. We made contact by hailing the vessel we've been seeing on our scanners. It was a scout ship much like the Martynov. There was no battle. The Martynov has also identified another unknown ship just out of range. (I'm putting who they are in spoilers for now.)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We also had the breakthrough in construction we've been expecting. We'll now shift our focus to propulsion, so as to make use of our new colony ships.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In other news around the empire, the Smith joined the Rica at Mintaka, I've ordered it to begin terraforming operations. Also the Selay replied to our friendship treaty, they're still uninterested in trade for the present. In Sol we're going to begin upgrading our factories. The databank has been brought online to provide a little bit of internal security in case the Ferengi get any ideas about our military secrets.

The Smith is available for anyone who wants to be admiral-ed.

Next post won't be until Monday at the earliest, probably later.

The difference is that it's information given to me as a player that a "real" person in the Federation wouldn't necessarily know

I always thought this is because you don't play the federation you play the spirit of the federation and can superscede the limitations of a physical body.

Also I have to love how obviously "Federation based" the description of the Ferengi are. It makes me sort of wonder why they are playable when even the game doesn't seem to take them seriously.

I'm going to agree with the others in regards to trying to keep this more roleplay focused. While this may make your life more difficult and ultimately may make us make some egregious mistakes, I think it overall will be more entertaining than a straight up comp-stomp.

Now as to our mystery ship, our goal is to "seek out new life & civilizations" so now that we know someone else is in that direction having our scout head off that way isn't a bad thing. As far as the Betazeds go, we really should push for their membership in the Federation as soon as is convenient. Just my thoughts.

That's one of the nicer touches in BOTF: All the racial descriptions and "analysis" are different for each Empire. The Klingon descriptions are basically variations on "They are honorable warriors, we should fight them for glory!" or "These people are weak and puny. We should conquer them!"  :P

The Ferengi ones are some of the most amusing, because they're always centered around how a given race could be profitable.

All right, it looks like we've got a pretty good consensus. Privately I'll keep an eye on how our enemies are doing, but decision-making and posting will be restricted to a role-play perspective.

Jarod Cain has a good point regarding the Betazoids and expansion in that direction. It's still a good idea to speed our relationship with the Betazoids, even without knowing why or what we might find as a result. Also doing so is in the spirit of the Federation.

And after all, aside from acknowledging the existence of the Ferengi, our "slightly-cheaty" information hasn't actually changed anything for our empire. For example, the Bandi's affiliation treaty would be well-known from an RP perspective, as now we aren't allowed to send them further friendship treaties.

Also, if you like I can add the "gameplay" information in spoilers, for those who care. The next turn post won't be for 6 hours or so, so you can let me know if it's a welcome addition.
Spoiler: An example (click to show/hide)
And finally, the USS Smith A remains unclaimed.

Turn 43 Addendum

We've sent the Betazoids a hefty bribe, hopefully they will be apt to join us soon.

Turn 44

In anticipation of the our bribe's effects, we sent the Betazoids a membership proposal. With a little luck they will join us soon. The Martynov is continuing to scout empty space, the Ferengi ship has moved out of sensor range and back towards their territory.

Turn 45

It looks like our membership proposal was unnecessary! The Betazoids have sent us a proposal of their own at the same time, which naturally we'll accept. While checking who to send our now-free trade route towards, I saw that the Selay have made first contact with the Ferengi. We should redouble our efforts to get them to trade with us, lest the Ferengi gain a critical foothold near our territory.

In more diplomacy-related news, the Ferengi sent us a demand. They want 750 credits. I can't imagine why they think we would give them that kind of money.

And finally, terraforming on Mintaka II and IV finished, we'll set both the Rica and the Smith to terraform the remaining planet in the system.

Turn 46
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Betazoids have a now-unpowered bunker network in their system. We'll reactivate it when the time comes, but for now let's build a shipyard. It shall be known as the EuchreJack drydock!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Thankfully they have a fairly well-developed system. In fact, they have too much development! I've ordered several of the extra farms to be scrapped. Also, since they've already built a number of research facilities, I'm going to assign Betazed to be a major research center for our empire.

Turn 47

The EuchreJack drydock is complete and active. Its presence has vastly expanded the range of both the Martynov and our colony ships. Leaving the Rica behind to complete terraforming, the Smith has set off for the Betazed system.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Meanwhile the Martynov is going to investigate the ship we detected several turns ago.

In Betazed, we're building factories in anticipation of a larger population once the Smith gets to work.

Turn 48

Thank goodness they're friendly!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The diplomatic skills of Admiral Sirus are growing legendary, as he makes peaceful first contact with yet another alien race. The Trill build powerful warships, but thankfully the captain of the TDS Protector A was willing to talk.

The Trill gave him a funny look when he asked if they knew the Ferengi. But the Trill ambassador did ask if they were anything like the Romulans. Apparently they've been trading with these people for some time. Naturally we're sending them a friendship treaty, and perhaps we can coax them into an affiliation treaty before these "Romulans" can.

Turn 49

In the interest of furthering our relationships with alien races, I've sent the Selay yet another offer of friendship. The Mintakans seem ripe for joining us as well, so they are getting a membership treaty.

The Martynov scouted a new system, Balosnee. It's a bit of a fire-and-ice hellhole, but it does have dilithium.

I'm a guy :P

I say, let the eager young officers go off to war and die. I'll be in the history books and have colleges and streets and shit named after me. Being a peace officer may be a little dull, but it has its perks :D

Odd I remember the trill looking far different then that.

Then again early Klingons didn't look anywhere like they do now (though they have a in-canon explanation)
