Regarding the Ktarians, they're more of a "shoot first and ask questions later" kind of race. That's why the Martynov is space dust. However, they're in a strategically valuable location and already possess two raiders, so it's worth our while to gain them as members. Think of them as magma-cannoning our dwarven caravan, accidents happen but that doesn't mean we're not sending a wagon next year.

Haspen you're already lined up for this destroyer fleet, it's just half-built at the moment.

Hmm, I'm afraid I don't remember as much about the mechanics as I thought. Refresh my memory, are space stations useful? I wouldn't mind commanding one of those, perhaps as a DS9 trading hub of sorts.

Outpost:

-Tiny amount of firepower and health
-Extends range of ships like a shipyard

Starbase:

-Like above, just moar firepower.
-Oh and it's guns has firing range of bazillion kilometres, so you have to charge once or twice before your ship can scratch a starbase.

Myself, I only update outposts to starbases in border systems and/or vital/huge systems, like home world.

Basically what Haspen said.

Outposts are simply spaceborne shipyards to extend the range of your ships. Unfortunately they aren't real shipyards, so we can't build ships there.
Starbases are very heavily defended outposts.

As you can see, we're able to explore a huge portion of the map simply by having shipyards in Sol, Betazed, and Trill. Personally I find exploration via minor race systems to be more practical than littering the area with outposts. Particularly because they can be so far away. Imagine how much more we could visit if we signed an affiliation with the Ktarians.

Therefore I don't put a lot of stock into either outposts or starbases. Typically I'll put a starbase over my homeworld, the colonized homeworlds of conquered major races, and both ends of a functional wormhole (if I find one). But I pretty much ignore troop transports otherwise.

Edit: I might consider building a few starbases if we're worried about random event ships. 2 troop transports are a lot cheaper than a fleet of destroyers. Maybe people can suggest options for when our current fleet is complete.

Sirus, you're getting the Protector and Guardian. They're their own "minor race ships" fleet which will be added to as we get additional spacefaring minor races as members. At the moment they're chilling on orbit of Trill keeping an eye on the Romulan border, which is now hotly contested.

Turn 75

It's turns like this that remind me why I usually play with random events turned off.

As far as I can tell the structures we lost were the shipyard (which should be in space), our communications grid, and the trade center. Since we don't have a fleet to speak of, no ships have been stranded by the loss of the shipyard.

Turn 76

The Romulans sent us another short (25 turn) non-aggression treaty. I see no reason to reject it, since we're not yet ready for any major conflicts right now. I expect they sent it in response to our sudden increase in defensive capability from the Trill.

Not much else is going on right now. I'm pondering buying off the remainder of the level 3 factory upgrade in Betazed to help the system get back on its feet. But I don't think I will unless we begin to feel a lot of pressure from the Ferengi or Romulans.

Turn 77

Our intelligence operatives report that a "report on our general economic status went missing". So apparently someone is spying on us. I'm not sure how the information would help whoever has it now.

On Sol we completed our third destroyer, the USS Brittain A. I'm putting ship production in Sol on hold for now, and the rest of the fleet will be built in Trill when we have a chance. Sol is now building some of the new buildings we have available, starting with a quick improvement to our universities.

With the Trill system right on the border with the Romulans, it will be useful to build a scanner system to keep an eye on things before we can get a scout constructed.

Turn 78

I could have sworn there was a Romulan outpost here 20 turns ago... I wonder if that squad of mystery ships has anything to do with its absence.

This is the view you get from scanner data. We haven't visited the system yet but we can be fairly sure that's their home system. It would also appear the Talarians have built a warship.

Turn 79

This glimpse of the inner workings of the Romulan Star Empire has reminded me how nice it is to be able to scan things. Thankfully the USS Sandhusky A has completed in the Trill system. Now we can get back to scouting.

The Romulans seem to have built an additional troop transport. Those mystery ships remain where they were, and seemingly aren't attacking the Romulan fleet. They must have some kind of affiliation. I'm guessing it's a minor race, since the Romulans would have told us if they'd signed an alliance with anyone. Maybe we'll bump into them soon.

Now that we have a scout, I'm buying that upgrade in Betazed so we can rebuild the EuchreJack drydock and move on with development. Trill is going to delay building the Research Institute (+30% bonus to all research areas while powered) to finish the fleet of destroyers. There will be plenty of time to do research when our enemies are dead.

Also the Ferengi proposed a war pact. We both declare war on the Romulans, they never attack, and our population gets a morale hit. No thanks.

Turn 80

This puts us +1 in Malurian, -3 in Balosnee, Betazed, and Trill. Oh and the maximum population in Trill is now 70 less than it used to be.

The Saskia finished terraforming in Balosnee, and is now headed to Trill to help salvage the situation.

As an added bonus, it looks like the Bandi finally joined the Ferengi. This turn sucks. I'm going to bribe the Talarians into trading with us to make myself feel better.

Turn 81

Nothing useful happened, I'm still feeling surly.

Turn 82

The EuchreJack drydock Mk2 completed in Betazed, the Sandhusky is checking out the remaining unscouted territory before heading back to the inhabited system we saw way back before half our planets were turned into garbage.

Talarian bribe part 2 is going out this turn, they should be willing to trade soon.

Turn 83

The destroyer USS Tian An Men A was built in Trill this turn. We're going to have it join up with the 3 we've already constructed on Sol.

We've also sent a friendship treaty to the Talarians.

The ship buildup we've been observing in Romulan territory is now 3 destroyers, 2 troop transports, 1 colony ship, and the 3 mystery ships. Not sure what this means for us. I have a feeling the colony ship is there because it's already terraformed all their planets, Lemma is completely terraformed now.

Turn 84

I'm ordering the construction of 2 databanks in Malurian. Also we'll begin building the Counseling Academy in Betazed. This building will give us a +50% bonus to intelligence points spent on internal security.

Turn 86

The Ferengi sent us a demand and the Romulans sent us a warning about our expansion. Both will be ignored. What can't be ignored is the Romulan fleet buildup, they're up to 4 destroyers. Thankfully our 5th will be done next turn.

Turn 87

The Saskia finally finished terraforming in Trill. That completes terraforming operations in systems we already inhabit. The only thing left to do with the Saskia is colonize a system, and with no admiral in command I must select that system myself. I've chosen Benecia.

The Sandhusky has confirmed the presence of absolutely nothing off towards the galactic west. We're now sending it back towards Romulan territory. The Talarians are very well pleased with us, they may offer an affiliation soon. Here's a look at the area we've been scouting:

The USS Sitak A brings us to 5 destroyers, construction of warships in Trill will continue for now.

In Malurian, we've activated the 2 databanks and begun construction of a trade center. In Mintaka, the farm upgrade is complete. We'll build a shipyard quickly before we upgrade the factories. It will make a great shipyard in time. Betazed continues to build the Counseling Academy while Catullan and Balosnee continue simply not being so darn tiny.

Apparently the Ktarians are now trading with the Ferengi, we can't have any of that so I'm offering them an affiliation treaty. If they reject it, we'll send them a bribe and then another one.

As long as no-one attacks us, the fleet can stay in Trill unless needed elsewhere :)

Actually the AI is fairly clever. They'll only attack systems they think they can occupy. Trill and Talar are far too large and well defended right now for the Romulans to take with just two type 1 troop transports. They'll go for Balosnee I'm sure.

If there is one thing that has immediately annoyed me about this game is the One episode aliens seem to ALWAYS be all about what that ONE alien was doing.

I am sure if there was a alien that appeared in one episode as a toilet salesmen this game would say this entire race was all about the toilets.

I dunno, I'd say that is the fault of the Star Trek franchise more than anything.  In Star Trek, most often if one member of an alien race was a toilet salesman, then ALL members of that alien race were toilet salesmen, and they're probably the best toilet salesmen in the galaxy!

Yeah, for a TV show that was suppose to be about diversity and individuality, it tended to generalize a lot about other peoples.

EDIT: I should probably mention that Deep Space Nine was an exception to this.  Even though I didn't like it as much as the other Star Treks as a kid, I now realize it is the absolute best Star Trek series.  No offense to TNG, of course I still like it.

Oh, and I'm guessing that I shouldn't be the first to be re-admiralized.  I've already got a shipyard and a colony.  Give me a ship, and I'd be ready to start my own minor race!  Hm, the EuchreJacks...I like it.  :P

First and foremost: I completely agree EuchreJack. Deep Space Nine was by far the best of the four series. And In the Pale Moonlight is the best Star Trek episode ever made if you ask me.

Second, yeah I'm going to prioritize "new" admirals for upcoming fleets. But the idea of having fleets means you can change and move around when your fleet gets destroyed, creates a colony, or builds an outpost. If we've got 3 unclaimed fleets and nobody's speaking up then I see no reason for an admiral to receive a new fleet, even 2 fleets at the same time. As long as there are fleets for people who want them, I'm not going to tell you how many you can have.

As far as I'm concerned you and Jarod Cain are absolutely in line for new fleets if you want them. You can definitely be planetary governor of multiple systems if nobody else wants the job. In fact, the whole idea of "planetary governor" is to give people half a reason to claim colony ships. Otherwise I think everyone would be yelling for battle fleets constantly. ;)

P.S. The shipyard is nominal at best, don't count it towards your "total". All I'm doing is remembering to call it the EuchreJack drydock any time anything happens in Betazed.

What works against Deep Space 9 is that it has a warming period longer then the original, Next Gen, and Voyager combined.

You won't like it the first few times you watch it.

It isn't a terrible thing. MST3k definately has a warming period for example.

Oh, and I'm locking this poll so you can't see what people have voted for until you've already voted. I've voted, mostly so I can easily see your votes. But my opinion should matter too, right? Even so, if it's a split decision I may remove my own vote.

Admiral Haspen, if we do go to war or begin raiding it's going to be up to you to direct your fleet (unless you say nothing, in which case it's up to me).
