Here is a composite image of the whole galaxy, as of turn 118.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
  • The ship by Tiburon is the Cortes. You can see that I have it set to explore back into the corner of the map.
  • The ship by Ramatis is the Sandhusky. It's set to scout along the Cardassian border.
  • The First Destroyer Fleet is located over Romulus raiding.
  • The second destroyer fleet is located in Balosnee, and is headed into Ferengi territory.
  • The Unity Fleet is moving to join together. 5 Talarian vessels in the Talar system and 2 Trill vessels in the Trill system are joining up in disputed space near Lemma.

I've been having issues posting here too if it helps.

Oh and I'll take that new Destroyer Fleet, give me either the Nautilus or the Miranda. Since this fleet will be under the head of the Starfleet Intelligence Bureau (me), it will be a ghost fleet called the Grey Fleet (unless you can think of a more appropriate name).

And since our assassination attemts that we certainly would never have anything to do with failed, we will have to take more proactive measures against the Romulans and Ferengi. What kind of ships are the Destroyer 2s, Mirandas or Constellations?

Each class of vessel has two levels. The basic, and the advanced, which is generally + to all stats.

As for Destroyers, Federation has three classes: Miranda, Constellation, and Defiant.

Jarod Cain, the Grey Fleet is yours. At the moment they're headed into Ferengi space to very covertly blow up Ferengi vessels and space stations. I'll put your flag on the Nautilus.

Haspen touched on the difference between the ships briefly.
  • A Miranda class destroyer costs 1410 industry to build. That buys you 62 hit points, 220 shields, 4 phaser banks and 3 torpedoes. It's got a speed of 1 sector per turn and operates in the medium range.
  • A Miranda class destroyer 2 costs 2660 industry, with 76 hitpoints, 280 shields, 6 phaser emmiters, and 4 photon torpedoes. It's got a speed of 2 sectors per turn and also operates in the medium range.
In addition to the enhanced hull and shields, the phasers and torpedoes deal more damage than the old model. And finally, the increased speed makes the Miranda an extremely effective border patrol boat.
The key here is that the upgraded destroyer 2 totally replaces the older models. All existing destroyers get automatically upgraded (at no cost) and we are unable to build un-upgraded destroyers from now on.

Constellation class Heavy Destroyers won't be available until several of our techs are level 6. They are an improvement over the Miranda in every way. Most notably having a speed of 3 sectors per turn, which is among the fastest ships in the game. But at that point I generally prefer to switch to Galaxy-X class Heavy Cruisers rather than keep building destroyers.

Defiant class Heavy Escorts are one of the last ships we develop, with some tech requirements at 10 and the rest at 9. They are absolute beasts, and have firepower superior to the Galaxy class Command Cruiser 2, though less hitpoints and shields. Also they are the fastest ships in the game, at a speed of 4.

Defiant's speed is matched by one of Ferengi's raider ships, but I don't remember which one.

I will check in-game and tell ya.

EDIT: Yep, Tokorn Raider II (Destroyer) is capable of speed 4. It is however behind Defiant in terms of everything else.

Speaking of command cruisers, is there any tangible benefit to including them in a fleet? Supposedly they're for "command and control", which implies better battle results, but I don't really see any difference with or without them (other than the weapons of the ship, of course). All they do is bog down my fleets in the short range.

In my experience, having any command-type ship in a battle will allow you to target individual enemy ships.
Otherwise you can simply order your ship to target "all fast-attack ships" and let the AI do its thing.

Likewise, having a scout ship in your battle will allow you to see the stats of enemy ships, you can see their training, orders, and other data. Without one you can only see shields and hull status.

That's the big reason I avoid Galaxy class ships. They're short range and never move faster than speed 2. For my beefier ships I prefer Galaxy-X class ships. They're medium range and have speed 2, and serve the same functions in battle (I think).

Galaxy-X is cruiser, not command.

Thanks Haspen. Not that it matters a whole lot anyway, I really dislike Command Cruisers.

Also, new poll!

As much as I like the zoo option, I'm going to have to throw my lot into the wait till they declare war. For now I think we should focus on the Ferengi to take the fight out of them.

I voted to wait. Doesn't the Federation take a fairly big hit to morale if they are the aggressors in a war?

Yeah, they do. Combined with the morale penalty for orbital bombardment, that's a significant morale drop and related industrial downturn right there. On the other hand, remaining in a state of quasi-war allows us to raid their systems for credits, and kill any ships produced for a morale boost.

By the way, do you have a colony ship yet?
