So this morning after I posted my replies, I had a moment of Fridge Horror regarding our latest updates.

It's an interesting moment where we've got a mystery on our hands, but only from a gameplay-focused perspective. In a few updates the truth will come out from a role-play perspective, and when it does it will be pretty obvious what's happened.

In the meantime, however, I'll offer you a challenge. The player who posts correctly describing

1) What the mystery is
2) What the resolution is
3) The evidence they believe points to their resolution

Will receive command of our second fleet of destroyers.

Nobody else will be able to claim that fleet until either A) someone posts correctly, or B) the mystery is solved in-universe.

Please post your theories in spoilers, for the sake of those who want to guess on their own. If, however, you'd like to work together to figure out the mystery, feel free to look at one another's ideas. I just want everything in spoilers in case people want to try and figure it out entirely on their own.

EDIT: I looked through my postings for the necessary clues. Technically everything you need to know is there, but there's one bit of information I thought you had that isn't there. I'm putting it in spoilers to help you figure out the mystery, but let me know if you can solve the mystery without this information.
Spoiler: Extra Information (click to show/hide)

Edit 2: Haspen, since you're already playing BOTF and since you already have a fleet of destroyers I'm going to bar you from winning this "contest". PM me if you think you know the answer though, and I'll tell you what's going on.

I'm seeing absolutely no response to the "mystery" post. Is this just a bad idea?

Should I scrap this altogether or are people still trying to figure this out?

Sorry, only on at night as I work the graveyard shift.

Hmm... Digging through the earlier posts, I'm just going to start making wild mass guesses here and I haven't checked the spoiler for the extra hint.

No need to apologize. I'm just concerned that asking people to solve a mystery is just too far away from the basic framework of an LP for people to be interested. I don't want to make people solve a ridiculous mystery if they simply aren't excited by the the idea.

The whole reason behind this was because I posted yesterday morning, walked away, and then was like *oh god* a little later. I'm wondering if anybody else caught the thing I did. I thought it was cool, and I wanted to give you all an opportunity to catch it too.

Tell you what, I'll leave the mystery up if people want to work on it. But I'll give what I think is a really big hint about it to help people out if they're struggling. I'll tell you the mystery, but you all still have to solve it. Double props if someone correctly guesses without this hint.

In addition to my personal life imploding, I temporarily misplaced my play cd for BOTF.

Expect the next update to be delayed at least until next week.

Review

Since it's been a while since my last update, here is a quick overview of where we're at.
Spoiler: Research (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Production (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Intelligence (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Diplomacy (click to show/hide)
Turn 102 Addendum

I noticed that relations with the Ktarians have cooled off a little, presumably due to Ferengi bribes. I'm sending them a nice friendship-boosting bribe to remind them how much they like us.

Turn 103

The turn started off with an announcement that the Romulans and Ferengi signed an affiliation treaty.

The USS Brunswick A completed in the Mintaka system. Sensors have identified a pair of Ferengi troop transports approaching our space.
Back in Romulan territory, the Cortes identified an outpost in orbit of their third colonized system. That can't stay there any longer, so the First Destroyer Fleet is going to deal with the threat.
Meanwhile the Sandhusky scouted the Pythro system on the far side of Ferengi space. It's an altogether uninteresting system with a large volcanic world and a large arctic world.

Out of fear regarding the Ferengi, I'm going to order the completion of the second destroyer fleet before we consider further development in the Mintaka system. I'm also redirecting Admiral Sirus' fleet to deal with any threats in the region.

Turn 104

The USS ShirKhar A took some damage fighting the Romulan outpost in Midos, but it should be all right. The outpost, on the other hand, did not survive. The First Destroyer Fleet will now be stationed in orbit of Romulus. Their orders: raid the Romulan territories and kill any ships foolish enough to attack them.

The Ferengi are building an outpost along our border, we'll have to deal with this threat soon. But at least they haven't declared war, so our colonies are safe for the present.

Still, to further secure the border I've cancelled a few special buildings in Sol, and we'll be producing destroyers that much faster to help secure our colonies.

Turn 105

On their way to assist along the Ferengi border, the Protector and Guardian encountered a pair of Romulan scouts escorting a troop transport. The cloaked scouts fled, leaving the transport to the torpedoes of Admiral Sirus.

The First Destroyer Fleet has arrived in orbit of Romulus. Let the raiding begin! The Ferengi sent us a warning about attacking the Romulans. Fat chance.

Turn 106

The Sandhusky scouted the Archanis system on the far side of Ferengi space. Here's a look at what we've scouted lately and the new system:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Our 4th ship in the second destroyer fleet is complete in Mintaka, the USS Everett A.

The Cortes scouted 4 mysterious ships in the system where we saw the Tarellian ship so long ago. With nothing better to do, I'm ordering it to investigate (suicidally if that's what it will take).

Turn 107

Contact!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Twice!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The USS Cortes managed to safely hail the 4 Vulcan ships in orbit of their home system. This means we can send it to the next neighboring system with mystery ships of another species! Let's hope they can survive 2 first contacts.

Speaking of battles. The TDS Guardian and Protector had a look at the site where the Ferengi were constructing an outpost on our borders. They saw only a light raider (the equivalent of our destroyer). It took heavy hull damage but managed to warp away. They destroyed the still-constructing outpost. I'm ordering Admiral Sirus's fleet back towards Romulan territory to try and catch any more ships.

The First Destroyer Fleet is enjoying their new task a great deal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Vulcans have encountered the Romulans and Ferengi, but aren't trading with either of them. They seem to like us as much as the Betazoids did, hopefully we can get them to trade with us without much issue.

Regarding the Cardassians, the Takarans seem to have only just signed a membership treaty with them. We made contact by visiting one of their colonies. The Sandhusky has identified 3 mystery ships just outside its operational range. We can come back later. In the meantime I'm ordering it to investigate Cardassian space. I'm also offering them a non-aggression treaty, which may kick the Sandhusky out, but that's not a big problem.

Speaking of diplomacy, I can tell the Ferengi have been bribing the Ktarians and Selay, I'm sending them both bribes.

Turn 108

The crew of the USS Cortes A are perhaps the most lucky in the fleet. They made "peaceful" first contact with yet another space-capable race.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Rather than making a direct attack, the Sheliak Raiders were issued the "evade" command. This caused them to shoot a quick blast of phaser fire before making evasive maneuvers. If they had fired torpedoes the Cortes would never have gotten away. With some relief, I'm sending the Cortes to scout some seemingly-empty space the Sandhusky had never gotten to.

The USS Covington A has completed in Sol. I'm sending it to Mintaka to join the rest of the destroyer fleet in production.

In diplomacy news, the Bolians offered us a membership treaty, which I am glad to accept. The Sheliak have met the Romulans, but aren't trading with them. They don't like us much, but perhaps we can send them some hefty bribes in the late future.

Also 5 Talarian warships appeared in orbit of Romulus, are they planning on bombing the system?

Turn 109

A most eventful turn!
  • The Vulcans accepted our offer of a friendship treaty. I've assigned a trade route to their system from Sol.
  • The Cardassians accepted our offer of a non-aggression pact. The Sandhusky was somehow teleported 9 sectors from their territory to the Balosnee system.
  • The Bolians joined our great empire! Here's a look at their highly-developed system:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also the Sheliak must really dislike us, they declared war after knowing us just a single turn!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In Mintaka, the USS Coronado A, our 6th destroyer in the second fleet completed. Three more ships remain, we're building two more in Sol and one more in Mintaka before we get back to development.

Turn 110

We've finally completed our Construction research.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Regarding diplomacy, the Cardassians are asking for money, I plan on ignoring them.
Additionally, it's clear to me that the Ferengi are trying to thwart our diplomatic efforts with the Selay and Ktarians. I'm offering a big bribe to the Selay, which should induce them to offer us a membership treaty. The Ktarians will get a bribe of their own when we have the funds.
For kicks I'm also sending the Vulcans an offer of affiliation. Maybe they'll accept.

Production is continuing uneventfully. I'll post updates as interesting things happen.

We've had absolutely no news in terms of random events or our intelligence operatives this update. I'm considering this a good thing.

Finally, our fleets.
  • The First Destroyer Fleet, commanded by Admiral Haspen, is raiding all three Romulan systems from their position over Romulus.
  • The Protector and Guardian, under the guidance of Admiral Sirus, are trying to catch any stray Romulan or Ferengi ships in and around our space.
  • The second destroyer fleet (just a placeholder name, once someone claims the fleet they can rename it) is waiting for the construction of 3 more ships before it moves out from Mintaka.
  • The USS Cortes A, after a narrow escape from the Sheliak fleet, is exploring along the edge of the galaxy. The Cortes is available to be claimed.
  • The USS Sandhusky A, after being teleported to the Balosnee system, is moving to assist the Cortes. The Sandhusky is available to be claimed.
  • We have no colony ships or troop transports at this time.

We had to discover vulcans?

Uhhh... this game is weird.

Also game the Sheliak are such a stickler to the rules of diplomacy because they simply are not humanoid. It was the show's genuin first attempt at creating a genuinly non-human race that shares very little in common with us.

The Vulcans are treated like any minor race. This is to keep things fair from a gameplay perspective. It wouldn't do to have the Federation start with 2 systems while everyone else gets one, just to maintain the fact that the Vulcans were charter members of the Federation.
The game compensates by making them desperately in love with the humans, we'll have them as members in no time at all.

In terms of the Sheliak. My biggest problem is that they pro-actively declare war on us, which gives us a big hit to morale. I don't mind so much when races like the Antedeans simply dislike us, but the Sheliak are aggressively jerks.

Keep on raiding the Romulans!

Turn 111

The Protector and Guardian encountered 3 Romulan destroyers and 1 Ferengi light raider. The enemy ships fled, with neither side inflicting any damage.

Turn 112

Oh no, how terrible.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As if we care about how the Romulans feel about us at this point. In fact, it would be to our benefit if they declared war on us. I'd like to begin bombing their systems.

On the other side of the diplomatic coin, the Vulcans accepted our offer of affiliation. Our ships can now explore that much farther. Also the Selay responded to our bribes and have offered to join us. Of course we'll accept.

The USS Newport A completed in the Mintaka system, while the USS Rockford A finished in Sol. That leaves just one more ship to round out the second destroyer fleet. I'm ordering it to be built in Sol, so that Mintaka can get to infrastructure upgrades.

Turn 113

These assassination attempts are getting tiresome.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Cortes scouted the Tiburon system, yet another worthless system. Meanwhile our sensors are reporting a buildup of Romulan and Ferengi ships near our borders. I'm sending the Protector and Guardian to investigate, but what we really need is the last destroyer to complete. Only 2 turns remain on its construction, so it's not worth purchasing the ship to speed the process.

Additionally, the Selay formally joined the Federation, here's a look at their system:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Turn 114

Admiral Sirus' fleet scores yet another kill, they destroyed a Ferengi light raider while in orbit of the Trill system.

Other than that, the only other interesting thing to happen this turn was the Cortes and Sandhusky identified new stars to explore. So at least we'll have something worth reporting next turn.

I'm also going to send a few bribes to the Talarians and Caldonians. We're very close to getting them as members and I'd like to speed the process. The Ferengi seem to have slowed down their bribes towards the Ktarians, so they can wait.

Turn 115

This turn started off with a bang, literally.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Thankfully there's good news on the horizon. We explored a new system and met a new minor race.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Additionally, the Guardian and Protector encountered the old group of 3 Romulan destroyers, 1 Ferengi light raider that's been violating our space. Again. All ships involved escaped the battle without damage. Again. The silver lining is that we're technically winning these battles, so our population is enthusiastic about the news.

In Sol the USS Somali A completed. This brings the second destroyer fleet to it's maximum of 9 ships.
This fleet will be sent into Ferengi territory to harass their fleets and destroy any outposts they can. Unless someone claims them and orders otherwise.

Now that most of the accessible space has been scouted, I'm sending the Sandhusky and Cortes around to unexplored sectors to increase our knowledge of the space we do know about.

Turn 116

This is a timely development.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Sandhusky has detected an unusual object in space, just outside our range.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Our sensors identify the object as an "Alien Entity". At the moment we can't know anything more about it. Finally, I'm offering membership proposals to the Talarians and Caldonians, they seem ready to join us but are unwilling to make an offer first.

Turn 117

Again the Romulan destroyers faced Admiral Sirus. Again they fled. In other news, the Bajorans accepted our offer of friendship, I'm assigning them a trade route from Betazed. Also the Ferengi are requesting money, I'm planning on sending them torpedoes instead.

Turn 118

Why did you guys insist we play with random events on?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The second destroyer fleet encountered a Ferengi light raider in orbit of Balosnee. It did not run far.

Thankfully, both the Caldonians and Talarians accepted our offer of membership. The Caldonians must be dorfs at heart, they're suicidally stupid.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Thankfully the Talarians are smarter. Not only did they successfully keep all their farms, they donated 5 warships to our navy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Gunstar, Havocstar, Battlestar, Bloodstar, and Firestar are going to join the Protector and Guardian as part of the "minor race ships" fleet, under the command of Admiral Sirus. Their continuing mission: kill shit.

On the diplomatic front, the Ktarians seem ready to join us. I'm sending them a membership treaty. Likewise, we have any amount of money in our treasury at all. So I'm spending it to induce the Zakdorn to join us.
