Great LP, by the way. In my experience, DON'T fight a two-front war with both the Romulans and Ferengi. Splitting your resources, at this early point in the game, is fatal. I would strongly suggest fighting the Romulans without declaring war: as the Federation, declaring war gives you a morale hit, bombing planets an even greater hit, and actually taking planets sends your morale right into the drain. However, winning space battles still gives a morale boost, and taking out a crucial colony ship or two will greatly hamper their expansion.

Also, I'm suggesting the Romulans because in my experience, they're a greater threat than the Ferengi. That cloaking device might be a small annoyance on a destroyer or scout, but when they get to cruisers, etc., they're nearly unstoppable. Besides, I would bet that they're the ones spying on us.

First and foremost: I completely agree EuchreJack. Deep Space Nine was by far the best of the four series. And In the Pale Moonlight is the best Star Trek episode ever made if you ask me.

Second, yeah I'm going to prioritize "new" admirals for upcoming fleets. But the idea of having fleets means you can change and move around when your fleet gets destroyed, creates a colony, or builds an outpost. If we've got 3 unclaimed fleets and nobody's speaking up then I see no reason why an existing admiral shouldn't receive a new fleet, or even command 2 fleets at the same time. As long as there are fleets for people who want them, I'm not going to tell you how many you can have.

As far as I'm concerned you and Jarod Cain are absolutely in line for new fleets if you want them. You can definitely be planetary governor of multiple systems if nobody else wants the job. In fact, the whole idea of "planetary governor" is to give people half a reason to claim colony ships. Otherwise I think everyone would be yelling for battle fleets constantly. ;)

P.S. The shipyard is nominal at best, don't count it towards your "total". All I'm doing is remembering to call it the EuchreJack drydock any time anything happens in Betazed.

I did make an important change though, the original post said old admirals could not get new fleets. Since that's literally the opposite of what I meant, take this post as the correct one.

Turn 88

Not much happened, we're still waiting on word from the Ktarians. A straw poll of the Federation Council indicates that we should begin harassing the Romulan fleets and systems once our treaty expires. We won't declare war, but if they declare war on us we'll be happy to destroy them. [Out of universe here, I will be leaving the poll up and we may change policy as the results change.]

I was going to have the Sandhusky investigate the white star where we saw alien ships a while ago. But I don't want to risk the ship when there's so much to explore now. We'll have it boldy go for now, and check back later.

In related news, it looks like the Ferengi took Rochani. They're getting mighty dangerous.

Turn 90

The Ferengi sent us another war pact against the Romulans. We'll just ignore it.

In Sol we completed the Federation Council. Unfortunately operating it takes a ton of energy, so before we build another colony ship I'd like to upgrade our databank and plasma reactors. I'm also going to purchase the rest of our type 2 factory upgrade in Mintaka. I'd like to get to shipbuilding a little faster there and there's still the level 3 upgrade to go.

Turn 91

The USS ShirKahr A makes our 6th destroyer thus far. What's concerning is the fact that the Romulans now have 6 destroyers of their own. If we get into a fight I think we'll need the fleets of both admirals Haspen and Sirus to come out on top.

I've decided to delay the level 3 factory upgrade in Mintaka in favor of doubling our destroyer production. We cannot afford to fall behind with both the Ferengi and Romulans eyeing our systems.

Turn 92

We lost a plasma reactor in Malurian, no great loss there. The Ferengi already hated us, so this isn't a huge setback either. Finally it's interesting the Talarians would react that way to the Ferengi. Their war won't have any practical benefits either way unless the Ferengi send ships to their system. But the Talarians will thank us for destroying any Ferengi ships.

Turn 93

The Romulans terminated our non-aggression treaty. Again. This time in synch with the expiration of our treaty with the Ferengi. I think it's time to offer the Ferengi another, I'd rather not fight two empires at once.

I'm taking the Guarding and Protector off of intercept duty. I don't want them engaging the Romulan fleet without the support of Haspen's destroyer fleet. Admiral Haspen, you should come up with a cool name for it.

Oh, and the Sandhusky saw this on the edge of the galaxy:

Turn 94

Also the Ferengi and Romulans signed a non-aggression pact with one another.

In terms of production, we had an active turn. Sol finished the plasma reactor upgrade, Malurian completed the mass replicator upgrade, Betazed completed the Counseling Academy, and Mintaka finished the first of its destroyers: the USS Saratoga A. I'm sending it to join Haspen's fleet in Trill.

Since we don't actually have 3 dilithium refineries, I can't set Sol to ship production without halting production elsewhere. And since Trill needs the ships built on-side and Mintaka is so much larger, I'm going to continue development in Sol. We're going to need more plasma reactors for future buildings, and we still need to construct a few energy-consuming ones that we've had available for some time. When we have the dilithium we may begin ship construction there again.

Malurian will see if we can get those wind turbines active, then build a dilithium refinery. If the turbines work, we can power both the refinery and trade center for free. In Betazed we'll upgrade our farms, while keeping the universities staffed, and we'll scrap a few spare plasma reactors to make a later upgrade cheaper. Mintaka will keep building destroyers.

Turn 95

The Saskia finished terraforming the two smaller worlds in Benecia. I'm ordering it to colonize the system now and we'll get around to terraforming the remaining planet later.

The Trill completed building the USS Reliant A. Only one more destroyer is required to complete Haspen's battle fleet. It's being built in Trill for now, the next destroyers built will go to a new fleet.

There's a Ferengi scout in orbit of the Selay system. It hasn't crossed the border into our space yet, and the relationship between the two is unchanged. I'll keep an eye on it but it doesn't seem to be hurting anything. I'm going to try another non-aggression treaty.

Turn 96

Our first first-contact in a long time goes to the as-yet-unclaimed Sandhusky.

The Zakdorn have a friendship treaty with the Ferengi, though we can't tell if they've been trading. Also bribes to this species will be expensive. We can buy our way to an affiliation quite quickly and scoop them up before the Ferengi can, but it will cost us about 10,000 credits to pull off. Funny thing is, with our economy as good as it is, we could do it if we wanted. [Look at the income number in the first picture.]

The Ferengi ship moved on to Zadar. An uncolonized system in the midst of our territory, technically we haven't claimed the system. So the Ferengi are still respecting our borders. Even so, their presence worries me. I'm offering the Selay an affiliation treaty to secure our relationship.

The Romulans still have 6 destroyers, and those mystery ships haven't moved. If we do end up fighting them I'd like to keep those mystery ships out of it. If they're as powerful as the Protector and Guardian they would most definitely swing the battle out of our favor.

Hm, I wonder if it might be viable to stretch out our affiliation of the Zakdorn to reduce the cost, but still get them prior to hostilites between us and the Ferengi.  If we're in real risk of losing the Zakdorn, then we should definitely purchase their allegiance.

Speaking of brides, can't be bribe the Ferengi off our back?  It would seem very in-character for them.

Two questions: First, how's my fleet doing? Number of ships and so forth.
Second, what the heck is the thing that showed up? Borg? Gas monster? Unless telling me would be OOC knowledge, or you don't know yourself.

EuchreJack: Basically it comes down to how long they've been trading with the Ferengi. If the Ferengi are close to signing an affiliation, all is lost. We can't sign a friendship with them and so the only way to curry favor is even more massive bribes later. If they aren't close, then we could trade with them for a while and save money like you said. Since we can't know how long they've been trading, it basically comes down to the collective paranoia of the community. If we aren't scared - bribe twice to trade. If we are scared - bribe three times for affiliation.

Sirus: Your fleet is "the minor race ship fleet". It will be just the Protector and Guardian until we absorb the Ktarians or Talarians. Those are the only minor races we've met who have ships. They're doing fine, we had them on "intercept" duty in case anyone crossed the border, but I took them off it until we can move out with all 9 of Haspen's ships.

In terms of the thing we saw. It's kinda OOC to tell you. Remember how I used the mouse-hover technique to reveal the Ferengi way back when? I can do the same and tell you the stats of that ship but it's just as "slightly-cheaty" as it was before. I can PM if you're really curious. Kinda like how I know who the "mystery ships" in Romulan territory are, I'm just not telling to preserve the RP aspect.

Oh yeah, about bribing the Ferengi. It won't really help. They're already so mad at us it would just be a moneypit.

First orders: As soon as the fleet is assembled at Trill, enter Lemma system, and then, go to the 'right'.

EDIT: Added a bit about my flagship and orders. Also, can you give me a list of the ships in my fleet (names)?

I was planning on sitting outside their systems proper for a bit in the hopes we could bait out a few destroyers at a time. But you're the admiral here, let's hope it works. I'll list off your ship names once the 9th is built.

I think you should buy those guys.  Worst case scenario you have them producing for you faster.  Best case scenario, you block out hte ferangi.

I don't see any indications of ships at Lemma but that might be because you don't have subspace scanner at Trill (or do you?).

I forgot to mention that going further into Romulan space should happen only if we don't meet resistance at Lemma.

The scanner is on Trill, and we know that all their ships are at the system I've been describing.

I guess I'm just confused about what you want to do.
  • We aren't formally at war with the Romulans and the poll indicates that we don't want to declare war. So going to Lemma to "attack" is actually not an option because the "attack system" command is not available unless we're at war. Also remember that the computer AI isn't going to be scared by anything we do.
  • If you mean to just go to Lemma, wait a turn to see if they come at us, and then move over, then that's another thing. But like I said, if they don't come out to meet us then moving into that system would force us to confront the bulk of their navy at once. They could even have the support of the mystery ships for the battle. I was hoping to avoid a single large-scale battle with their whole fleet.
  • I was planning on moving into the system just "below" their major fleet and ordering our fleet to begin raiding. We'll steal credits from their systems, and hopefully that will entice the Romulans into leaving home to come and stop us. I figured we could just keep doing that until we'd killed off a few of their ships, then moving into the system where we've seen the buildup only after we've weakened their fleet significantly.
Like I said, you're the admiral here. But I'm a little confused by what you hope to achieve by going to Lemma at all. As far as I can tell, just having our fleet in orbit of the system won't do anything to draw out their ships. Also, how long were you planning on staying at Lemma before "moving right"? The way you described it earlier I understood that you didn't want to wait long.
