A nudge with a spot of how magic came to be and a bit of backstory stuff on the relationship between Giants, Dragons and Gods.
No one really knew which came first of the trio. Some think that Dragons stood as the original chaos in the world. Others think that Giants shaped the unknown void and gave the names to things and then Gods appeared to control the concepts with Dragons following to muck things up. Or Gods brought the world into existance with Dragons and Giants following. No one really knows how exactly these powers came into existence. But scholars have decided on one thing that the three can be classified as. Dragons serve as a force that changes the essence of things, Their magic reflects this as they coerce stones to become like gemstones, They go about changing the true names to serve their end. Dragons being generally chaotic compared to Giants and Gods seek the short term goal. Where a Giant would dig out a lake and catch a raincloud, a Dragon would coerce the grass and bend it to his will, making it transform into water. But not all Dragons are malevolent, some chose to adopt humans and raise them as their own. Some simply wish to be left alone but others just want the world to return to a state of pure chaos. To clarify on things Dragons do not always appear as great flying lizards, the have free reign over their appearance, Some appear as great flying lizards but some may appear as a mass of flying tentacles, or a trusted adviser...
Where Dragons force the true name, Giants chose to manipulate and change the world around them. When the Gods had created the world and brought the matter into existance it was the Giants that shaped it, Digging out valleys and pulling the earth to build great peaks. It was said that the Elder Giants had tamed the world for the younger races when they went to war with the Dragons in the times of the beginning, Although most of the details of the war was lost to the ravages of time it is accepted by scholars that it did reduce the amount of Dragons and Giants in the world. Only the cleverest of Dragons and Elder Giants remember that time so a enterprising scholar may journey to the corners of the world to learn the secrets of the Dragon-Giant War. But its marks are left across the world. After this time the young races entered the world and the Giants began to make their way out of the world. Some of the Elder Giants fell asleep in their old age, making up a good share of the mountain ranges of the world. Other Giants pulled up the largest of mountains to create their own world of Giants Country, A strange and magical land that is their size infused with their magic. But others had chosen to stay in the mortal lands, Some spiteful of the young races and feel that that their world had been overrun, Others feel that they must help their young cousins.
The Gods are the most mysterious of the three forces, considering the fact that they do not take a physical form. But it has been accepted that they have a unique position as the creators of the material. They have their own power and domain where they are free to create and watch over the material where they domain. Along with acting through creation they may act through their domains of power in events known as Miracles. They are empowered by worship, It had been noted by scholars that once mortals had ceased the worship of a deity, their miracles are recorded less often and when they do occur they do not match the power of those previously recorded, so among the clerics of a deity spreading their faith is among the most important things they do.
The Mortal, Young Races decided they wanted power as well, but did not have the grand strength of the Giants, nor the coercing power of the true names that Dragons have nor did they have the raw power of Gods. Another source of power of the Old Three is the knowledge of the True Names. Giants manipulate the True Names, Dragons coerce and dominate and Gods define .So they have found a middle route, Man has studied Draconic, by either appeasing Dragons or through force, They have discovered that through magical ritual which is based of the Draconic lies, and physical ritual which serves as a focus that they too can share some of the power of the Old Three. But study and ritual is not the only way the Young Races have discovered and harnessed the magic of the world. Every being has a spark of magic in the world (With the exception of Pariahs) and they discovered that by making contracts with dark, skittering things, they can amplify their own power. Or some people are just born talented and attuned to the winds of magic that blow a fine wind from Giants Country and the Feylands.Even a few great warriors have been able to exhibit power similar to the ancient power of Giants, their strength and skill eventually reaches a level where a certain degree of magic is carried with it, Allowing great heros to cut through swaths of lesser men. This effect makes Heros be in great demand for mercenary services when countries go to war.
