Hello!

Mike Mayday: Personally, I don't think this thread here has begun devolving into an ASCII vs. graphics combat thread yet. For that to happen, people would need to make blanket statements and then have other people comment/discuss those blanket statements by using blanket statements of a similar type and contrary content.

I think that there are two important things to keep in mind:

First, if you ask people for their choice in a matter, they are likely to express the reasons why they made that decision. For some, one way or the other seems clearer, for others, they simply got used to certain visuals, while others have principles about games that they want to uphold. As long as the poster is aware that those are their own personal feelings and opinions and allow others to have different feelings, I think these statements are unproblematic and can actually be very enlightening in my opinion.

Secondly, fights between preferences are kind of like flame wars based on trolling. Thus, I think that the standard troll strategies work while a thread has not devolved yet. That is, if someone makes an odd statement, simply ignore it and do not challenge them to elaborate (= fight).

Anyhow, the only criticism I would state about this thread and poll would be that the creator forgot to offer an "other" option, which is quite a legitimate answer to this question (some people use their own sets not publicly shared or may have different choices depending on situations). However, that criticism has been stated before, so I initially hesitated to mention it at all.

Anyhow, let's just be hopeful that this thread will remain peaceful.

Yours,
Deathworks

I've been sticking with ASCII lately, mostly because I screw up the tileset and go back to a freshly unzipped file.

I'd like to go back to a tileset at some point though, I sort of mishmash my favorite tiles from all the makers. It takes time, but it's deliciously customized for me.

Used to use Phoebus, as part of the Lazy Newb Pack.

But... since I've been grabbing my DF straight from bay12games itself, I've been using ASCII.

Ironhand.

I don't really like ASCII because's there's too much "noise" in the sets, all the periods and commas all over the ground make it hard for me to tell just what's what.  Jolly Bastion is an interesting approach, though that set is kind of inbetween ASCII and a graphical set.  I also like having seperate creature graphics, because it makes it easier to tell what's roaming around on the map.

Ah yes, Knutor, I forgot about the messed up text- I've been playing with TT for quite some time now.
Well then, I guess we have to wait for TT to be fixed completely and then find a big font!

(though I always point out that at 16px the font and its size is exactly the same as on these here forums).

My tileset needs to be square, I started using Markvii "ascii" years ago and I'm used to it now (:
It has nice flowing walls that I don't remember being in the default tileset.

At least my browser allows me to enlarge the text if I so desire.

The power of ASCII is that a proper tileset makes those characters distinct, even at small sizes. It is particularly helpful when I am working on a small laptop monitor and want to see as much as possible at once. Also, I love the abstractness of ASCII. Imagining how everything looks makes me feel far more involved.

This, to me, is the strongest point of ASCII.

I use Phoebus, though I will use ASCII if I have to. I just don't like having to 'k' to tell if this is a dragon or a dog or a...

ASCII. Hate the fonts and dislike the looks of the other graphics.

I stick to ASCII. I tried some tilesets for a short while, but I get just as confused by them as I would when I would try to read Russian or Greek. While I could recognize some of the Cyrillic characters, and all of the Greek, most words would have no meaning to me.

Maybe I'm just too stubborn to learn a tileset but ASCII just feels right for me, like it's the way The Toady One sees it and meant it to be played. Then again, ASCII might just be a placeholder for bigger things he has in mind.
I'm sure Toady sees the entire world as letters, numbers, and punctuation marks.

I just think Toady doesn't want to waste time on graphics since it can be done by the community.
