Stupid miner dorfs!
« on: April 13, 2012, 10:27:10 pm »

Hey everyone, I embarked on a mountain with a waterfall nearby. I had 2 miners, a ranger who later turned into a fisher, a woodcutter, a planter, an engraver and a carpenter, on previous adventures with these dwarfs I had no problem at all so I assumed there would be no problem here. There wasn't a problem ever except starvation and dehydration, after I had done the basics of making a few bedrooms, farms, workshops and stockpiles I noticed there was no stone so I searched and after seconds of scouring the map for this space waster I had found some. I designated it to be mined and so it was mined, seconds later they must have had a fight and jumped off the waterfall mountain cliff in each others arms and died because both their corpses are in the same spot. Since they are the only ones with picks I have no way of digging anymore so my fortress is screwed unless there is a way to make picks from stone or wood.
tl;dr - My only miners committed suicide and now there's no way to get their picks
Everyone is welcome to advise me on saving my fort from certain demise.

Waterfalls are the devil. Your first action should be to make a bridge spanning across the river at the top of the waterfall, for 3 squares wide.

Next time that is, if you can't mine you're (almost) stuck forever. Might as well abandon and reclaim.

Commit suicide now.
Make wooden craps, trade them to dwarves when they eventually come. Work at sealing the waterfall off.

I never thought about reclaiming, I never knew what it was to be completely honest. Also the carpenter and potash maker along with a cat dived, dwarfs most certainly are extravagant creatures when they inhabit areas with water falling nearby, its almost like they are drawn to it. Fascinating. (Try to imagine someone narrating saying that sentence, trust me it will blow your mind.)

I tried to as soon as my miners died, I couldn't figure out how

To reclaim, simply go to the map screen to embark again, but this time, press "R" (you have to either have caps lock on or be holding the shift key - the "R" must be uppercase. Then, simply select the name of your old fortress. It will have the dwarven name... So you might want to look that up before you abandon.

You should also set the top of the water fall as a restricted traffic zone (d-o-r) as well as building a bridge to help ensure that the bridge is actually used.

The water tends to be shallow at the top of the waterfall and dwarfs think they can cross it. This leads to certain doom especially for hunters and fishers that go off and do things without your permission.

setting it to restricted won't help that much. It's the only place they can cross, they will use it. Even funnier, your mason/architect dorfs will happily wade through the river to construct a bridge from their preferred direction. You need to do the constructions one z-level higher for better safety and then, in the end, still build a wall along one edge to prevent caravans and diplomats from running in.

Or you can use dfhack: designate the ramps to be removed and use the deramp command. Poof, no way into the river anymore.

Before you can reclaim, however, you need to abandon the place. You could just hit 'abandon fort', but you might as well get the rest of your dwarves to follow the miners...
