Rounding the pachyderms for the circus
« on: April 13, 2012, 11:16:15 am »

I'm currently trying to reclaim a fort I destroyed earlier out of boredom by releasing the clown car. My embark has a buttload of elephants and I've been training for war. My fort is now up to "general familiarity" and I've had a couple of "skillfully trained". I intend to use them to try and retake the fortress. Unfortunately, they die of starvation because they get hungry faster than they can eat. I have no idea how to fix them in the raws. Would it require to regen a world? I tried searching but I didn't come across with a straight solution. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about regening your world, but to change the raws so that they don't starve you need to increase their grazer value.

The grazer value indicates how much "hunger" is reduced by eating, and elephants have a low grazer value.

Yeah, their GRAZER value is 12. It needs to be at least 20 or higher for an animal to be able to sustain itself and even then you need a laaaarge pasture with a lot of grass. And given the biomes Elephants normally reside in, it may not contain enough grass.

Raise this value to 50 and you'll definitely have enough. I wager you'll be fine if you edit the save-game raws with this and I doubt you'll need a regen but I'm not completely sure. Will probably be worth it though, Ellies are really cool and fukken sweet to have. I have fond memories of a fort in which I employed War Elephants and a War Giant Tiger to hold back a hill titan.

Thanks guys for the tips. I guess I went a bit overboard by copying the mountain goat value (1200). I changed the raws in both places and I'll see if I can keep them alive now. My embark is covered in grass so it's no problem really if the fix works. I plan to have a big showdown War Elephants/Clowns later on. Should be fun, I've never fought the circus before...

You don't need to regenerate. Simply open up your data/save/regionX/raw/objects/creatures_large_tropical.txt file and change [GRAZER:12] on the elephant to something like [GRAZER:50]. If you want this change to also carry over to additional worlds made then you will also need to make the change in your raw/objects folder in the main file as well.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

yep, just editing raw saves will work (dffolder - data - save - region - raw - objects - creature_large_tropical)

I'm pretty sure it's at the top.

Personally, I just remove the grazer tags. It's a bit too much of a hassle and when your food stocks are overflowing, you can't slaughter anything for the moment and damnit can they please stop making babies it's a great relief to dump em in a cage.

I've been rob off an epic battle. Turns out a forgotten beast made of crystal glass killed most of the clowns... Is there anything I can do with its body?
