I vote making the crystal flexible with some small-ish measure of control over their shape. This is a good thing on two counts because 1) it means we're harder to break and 2) we can make tentacles once we metamorphose again and have enough matter to use in appendages without worrying too much about if we lose it.

+1

Become flexible, being able to move your "appendages" around, while becoming less susceptible to fracturing.

We could gain the ability to move matter around after using this, it may even be a part of it. Not to mention did anyone else think of creating an army of walking crystals?

Have the ability to increase temperature of surrounding matter by spending energy. That will alloz us to defend ourselves, break through obsatcles and move around. (by melting matter under and around us)

I think that we all want the ability to move mateer around, including ourselves. amen to that.

So, flexibility and movement.
In that case I will introduce you to a mechanic that I was saving for when other entities show up.

As you know, turns in this game are called cycles. What you might not know, is that they are literally cycles of your operation. Every cycle a pulse of energy spreads out and causes crystals to grow and  matter to be assimilated. This pulse moves relatively fast. Other entities in the world dont follow your cycles, meaning they can do whatever they want between cycles.(but when a cycle happens, you grow way faster than anything else can move a respectable distance)

However, there is a smaller unit of time. These are called ticks. Every cycle is composed of 10 ticks. You cannot grow during ticks, but you can do other actions(currently only the flexing and movement, but you can also just dump energy into something touching you and hope for the best). Should you choose so at the start of a cycle, the game will change from cycle mode to tick mode. However, you cant change to tick mode in the middle of a cycle. Being in tick mode carries a penalty to energy production.

Gen 2 Cycle 1

The new crystal structure is more flexible than before. It is harder to break, and carries another useful feature. By using some energy, you can force crystals(and assimilated matter) to bend in a way that you find suitable, thus making you capable of moving parts of yourself. You have now returned to normal operation. Further metamorphosis is blocked off, due to having already adapted to surrounding material. How do you wish to spread?

*Properties of Assimilated Medium-Density matter have changed greatly, and Medium-Quality Crystals have become fabricatable. Please consult database of crystal forms for information.

Next cycle: Assimilate the lowest medium density blob. (10 Medium densities , that should about max out our energy storage.)
Cycle after that:
Another low quality cristal, and down as much low densities as possible. (This will probably waste some energy)

We should also plan to get a medium crystal somewhere.

We should also plan to get a medium crystal somewhere.
Since we need to encapsule it in low quality crystals, our only hopes are going up into the air or down and hoping to find some sort of cavern.

But we can now move matter that has been assimilated by us, so couldn't we just make a cavern ourselves?

I think we'd need somewhere to move the matter to, first.

Well, if our flexing is strong enough, we could simply move the matter above one of our tendrils up to create a gap. Maybe we should widen one of our tenrils in that case.

I say we continue growing for now, perhaps moving mateer so we can move our crystals down the vertical tendril.

We could start by growing into the material directly around our current crystals. That way we can look into shifting the bits around to create whatever gap we need at a later date, probably by forcing the assimilated material upwards into that gap.

Cycle after that:
Another low quality cristal, then assimillate the ground around the low quality cristals and down as much low densities as possible.
Cylcle after:
Unkown building activity  + push the crystals downward using the lowdensity and the medium density clump as anchors.
