just try to assimilate around the unassimilable cluster. also create a three-tiles wide collumn of crystal going down. Or start with a single-tile wide, for that matter.

yeah, let's assimilate all the matter around the high integrity cluster, and start a column going down. Let's make it three wide and have the center be medium strength crystals.

Since we do not have enough energy storage for our energy production, I say we make some more low-quality crystals in the cavern.

Damn it, how did I miss that? Actually, maybe we should make crystals to the right of the high-integrity matter.

yeah, we should surround the high integrity matter by converting the matter next to it and creating low quality crystal in the empty space. and also create a pillar of crystal down to the floor somewhere.

Now we have these long tendrils should we not try and flex them through the cavern below us to see whats there before we expand our crystals into it?
If we hit something nasty I'd rather loose the tendril than a crystal core.

I kind of worry that you may become too heavy and just drop, there are various medium-density objects just above the cavern roof that would make great anchors. And building a low-quality crystal strand downward would help a lot with energy storage and provide some knowledge of one of the two great unknown frontiers...

lets assess our structural integrity. how likely is it that that pillar down might break off? or that our other bits might get broken?

Very unlikely when undisturbed.

I vote for assimilating up from the far left and right edges of what has been assimilated until it is no longer possible to go up by assimilating.

And to continue building low-quality crystal down to the bottom of the "cavern".

And if there is any energy left, assimilate some of the medium-density matter along the right-hand growth.

Why would we want to go up.  It might be dangerous up there.

not up, down. and ensure structural integrity of the crystal collumn. continue turning around unassimilable cluster.
