If Dwarf Fortress released an application for touch products like Kindles or Ipads, would you want it?

Yes! That sounds like an awesome idea!

Dwarf Fortress App
« on: April 12, 2012, 04:19:15 pm »

I don't believe the idea has been brought up before, I think that a version of Dwarf Fortress on touch products would be pretty cool. Does anyone agree with me? Are there any reasons why it wouldn't be feasible (I don't know if those technologies would even be powerful enough to handle the sort of processing that Dwarf Fortress requires), or if there are not, would ☼Toady One☼ be willing to allow such a thing?
  What do you guys think?

DF heavily relies on the keyboard and complex menus.  Making it touch-friendly at all would mean a total interface rewrite.

There's always DFTerm and telnet if you want to play on the go.  Check out the DF Multiplayer thread  and DFTerm for more info.

DF is also extremely heavy CPU/Memory wise. Most touch applications couldn't handle it in its current incarnation. But maybe if Toady sacrifices a few players to Armok.....

The game isn't even near 1.0v, there is no point in creating an "App".

An app would need to access the game running remotely on a server capable of handling the CPU and memory load

This actually has been suggested before.
Technically, it's not impossible.  New phones like the Galaxy Nexus have 1GB of memory and fairly fast processors.  DF could work within those confines.  It would be like playing DF on an old laptop.

However, it's an awful lot of work, and making DF touch-friendly would be difficult.  If Toady spent his time on this, you wouldn't get any other DF updates for a really long time.

DFterm could potentially do this sort of thing.

What about just an information app? Like a list of the different stones, their layers, what gems/ores they can contain. Also how to set up a military, the usefulness of all weapon materials, information about creatures, etc?

Essentially? Yes, but more portable, and would hypothetically only contain information relevant to the latest version.

Offline wikis are also a fairly common suggestion topic.  You can find a couple of downloaded wikis around, or get a program and download it your self.  Then you load the site up on your phone/tablet and it's a local site.

If you could import worldgen from your PC, you could adventure mode on your mobile device without killing its processor I think.  The interface would still be a bitch, but it would at least be feasible.

I think RL could adopt to touch screen pretty easily. (Though that's assuming that context commands are possible, which I dont know... I havent gotten to play on to many tablets or smart phones. 8<)

Since android phones are Linux based you pulse probably run Df on one, but you'd probably want an external keyboard, and of would be horribly slow, my ideos is having trouble just typing this
