Well, I used to have a bunch of weapon traps leading to a ready-and-waiting unit of swordsmen... then a unit of crossbowmen...
Now however, with ideas carried over from Project Dystopifort, which has three goals: Make a super efficient colony, make living there a nightmare, and come up with a better name that is not two words forced together rather uncomfortably.
Now I have cage traps. All the weapon components have been reused in traps now forming a secondary line of defense between me and the outside (And the cave beasts, as luck would have it.) The cage traps get a lot of things for me to use, and after stripping them, they become great, erm, teachers of the soldie- i mean, children of the fort. These teachers are often... injured, and without insurance, they have to be boile- err, toas- no, what I meant to say was, released back to their homeland. Yeah. There's always more teachers.
Now then, after a good long while passes, these children who have seen many a teacher graduate. They walk down the Hall of Endless Trap- Oops, wrong sheet, ... here it is: The Hall of Celebration, and they exit to the room of draftin- the room of district selection. Yeah.
(For those who don't know, this is an "in character" report from what I hope will become the greatest dystopian fort ever. It's divided into districts with each very similar/the same jobs, a giant "capital" in the center with a giant arena kept stock with all manner of vicious beasts, and under that we have the training room. It's a bunch of 2x2 glass-wall cells with a bed, masterwork furnishing, quantum food hatch, and animal that goes rabid in the confined area. Every one in three children are sent to this room, sealed in for a nice, long while, and come out a supersoldier... or dead. If they really are good, then they get to navigate a hallway of deathtraps MEANT TO TARGET DWARVES ONLY. You know, to test their dodge... and luck. Survivors are immediately drafted. The military has four tasks: hunt large threatening beasts that will not submit to caging, defend the fort from lucky invaders that leak through the traps, keep the citizens under control, and occasionaly preform mighty tasks in the Arena for the enjoyment of the other dwarves.)
