I could never imagine discussing DF with someone who I didn't already know was into it. I personally am ashamed of my gaming.
Say it loud and say it proud ...

Thinking of this post, I discussed DF with 3 people today. They all refused more or less to try it out.

I got booted from a guild in an MMO once I explained a little bit of DF to them.  No boot message, I just logged in the next day and was no longer in the guild.

"Can we talk about something else? I'm starting to feel ill"

Admittedly, I was explaining the kittenfall after discussing the mermaid farm.

But it should be easy enough not to use them in a way you feel is dumb while letting other people have their hilarity.

Friend of mine had been waxing lyrically about Skyrim. In return I told him about the goings-on in my then current fortress. It was something hideously gory. He was thorougly amused.

I kept regaling him with tales of my dwarven exploits, until he caved and wanted to play too. He had his laptop with him and I downloaded the lazy newb pack.

As I was explaining the basics (of designation) to him, friend number two showed up. He made a sarcastic quip about the graphics and how he thought his computer wouldn't be able to handle all that beauty.

We were running a graphics pack.

I tried explaining the doesn't-care-about-anything generator project to a friend.

Him: "I don't know whether to laugh or feel horrified."

Me: "You get that a lot with DF"

I normally try to hook players with the combat arena.

"Ever wondered what would happen when 300 naked men with wooden clubs try to take down a herd of wild yaks?"
"No."
"Well you're about to find out".

But most of my friends are put off by the graphics anyway. They love the mechanics, don't mind the UI, but are too accustomed to steam games to get their mind out of the shiny bandwagon.

oh. and:

All I had to do in order to get my ex-fiancée to play it was to mention that its learning curve made EVE’s look like a gentle incline.

I didn't really notice any incline on EvE's curve. That's why I probably took up DF so easily.

This. Same goes for Shores of Hazeron, makes eve look easy, and this makes SoH look easy.

Dad- "D'ya want a cup of tea? Ooh, what's this one called?"
Me "It's called Dwarf Fortress"
Dad " Sounds pleasant enough. I'm glad it's not another one of those super violent games you play"
Me "I just finished cleaning up the remains of 87 goblins who were flung by a raising bridge into a hole where they dropped 15 stories . Any survivors were then dismembered by giant spinning serrated blades."
Dad "Giant spinni..." *Sighs*
Me "Oh and a cup of tea would be great thanks"

My wife was horrified when I told her I was butchering kittens to keep their population down.

I tried to tell her they weren't real, but I guess the thought of an entire industry built on the corpses of adorable fluffy kittens was just too much.

A librarian seriously thought I was hacking the school network when I played DF one day on the school computers.

I've tried, and failed, to explain dwarf fortress to many people. Mostly my parents, who have already got it into their heads that video games in general are the sole thing ruining the world. It's really quite a chore.

My brother sees me air pumping.

Him: What happened?
Me: Just caught my first dragon in a copper cage trap!
Him: ...copper?
Me: Oh, wait, let me check.
Him: Of course it's not copper, there's noway a fire breathing giant monster could get trapped in...
Me: It's nickel!
Him: Oh for the love of
