As to winning, I don't like games where you can win as much anymore... It kind of feels like getting to the end of a book. Dwarf Fortress is like a book that just keeps on writing itself for as long as you can manage to keep reading.

The never ending story in video game form :)

I like games that have stories.
I also like games that generate stories.
My last adventurer was a mage who killed every other wizard on the planet.
You generate your own win screen.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

Honestly, I've never had too many problems explaining to people that you can't "win," unless they're really out of the video game loop. The concept of a "sandbox" is pretty well known.

Recently, though, I've been modding enough that my roommate's been giving me hell:

"Do you ever actually... play the game? Or just edit text?"

Some people are unable to recognize the diffrence between a game and real life. My girlfriend got upset when I butchered kittens and puppies. Then again shes a vegetarian and Im not.

I can never quite understand this.  I'm very much vegan and all for animal rights, but you can bet your ass I'm stuffing every kitten and puppy into a single cage and buying out caravans with my master quality roasts from thier adorable hides when I play DF.

Also, to everyone talking about "winning" ... just compare it to sandbox mode in SimCity?

I explained this game one time to my sister and her boyfriend. They weren't too interested. A year later, I'm talking about it again. "Oh, yeah. That game where you drown people to steal their stuff?" he says. Yeah. That's about all they took away from it. Not bad, but it could be better.

My entire class being horrified when I discussed atomsmashing a family of useless migrants. The looks on their faces were priceless.

Kodkod prefers the fairer sex. Wouldn't have anything to do with the bearded menace.
This is why I say fiancée instead of fiancé. Was it not clear?

Are any of the women who play DF, straight?

I've seen a few girls on these boards reference boyfriends. But it does seem like DF attracts a fairly high LGBT crowd for some reason. Or perhaps they're just more willing to admit it here?

He said: "So you can never win, and you play as some kind of demented psychopathic god?"

I said: "Yeah. Pretty much."

He said: "Link me."

Only played for a week or so though.

Ah, I missed that extra 'e'. Gonna have to train my speed reading mode to pay attention to that word. My apologies for the mistake.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Yup, I am a girl who is straight and play DF. I've unsuccessfully tried to persuade my boyfriend to try DF. He doesn't really have that much spare time, so it's probably a good thing :P
