Greatest reactions to DF gameplay, ever
« on: April 12, 2012, 01:15:19 pm »

Please share!

Mine, so far:

Sitting playing DF. Wife sitting nearby surfing the web. Hears my exasperated sigh.

Wife: "What's up?"

Me: "... Well, I have my fort population set to 100. Current pop is 151, 76 of those are kids. Now I know where all my food is going and why nothing seems to be getting done."

Wife: *Lol* "I'll say."

Me: "I have a plan, though." (goes to top of map) "See this bridge over this volcano? I'm going to load all the pets I can't slaughter and all 76 kids on to it, and drop them in."

Wife: O_O

Me: >.> "... Naa, just kidding, just the animals..."

Wife: *relieved LOL* "Whew! Had me worried there, thought you were serious, for a second I though this game was turning you into a psychopath!"

EDIT: to correct the mistake that was so kindly pointed out to me by the very first reply ;-)

tried to explain the game:

"So it's like building a working city with lot's of workshops and you have to get the materials, a bit like settlers. And all your workers have personalities, likes and dislikes and such. For example I have one guy with a pet hamster and one with a hamster phobia and the phobia guy is nearly driven to suicide from seeing the hamster around all the time which could result in (explain tantrum spiral)."

"So how does the game end."

"(explain some common endings like HFS, sieges, necromancers getting at the refuse stockpile and such)."

"Oh, and how do you win?"

"Uh, you can't actually win. Occasionally someone reports something epic and is declared to have won the game, but basically there are just a lot of ways to lose."

"So, why do you play that game, why would anyone want to play it?"

I told my friends how I killed someone in adventure mode by throwing his own arm at him. They were all amazed.

I explained it as being like a psychotic version of farmville, but with 1980s graphics, and unholy slaughter.

With magma, fire, and genocidal rages.

When I was explaining my Happy Fun Surprises (HFS) Room to my kid sisters. They giggled and asked more questions. Then the younger one made a name tag that says "HELLO MY NAME IS Urist".

Sister: "What's that?"
Me: "Dwarf Fortress. My dwarves are being massacred by giant lions."
Sister: *mumbles something* "Nerd game for nerds."
End of discussion.

Had me worried there, thought you were serious, for a second I though this game was turning you into a psychopath!"

I laugh each time my boyfriend cringes whenever I say "Yay! Puppies!" because we both know this means more soap. I've also told him in great detail how an atom smasher works and the dangers of pets and children. Yup, this is a very odd game.

All I had to do in order to get my ex-fiancée to play it was to mention that its learning curve made EVE’s look like a gentle incline.

"Challenge accepted."

Some people are unable to recognize the diffrence between a game and real life. My girlfriend got upset when I butchered kittens and puppies. Then again shes a vegetarian and Im not.

The best reaction Ive had was when I showed an old old fort where a zombie whale came out of the sea and killed loads of dwarves. Got several friends playing the game temporarily because of it.

Yup, this is a very odd game.
But I wouldn't change a thing about it (minus the updates. I like updates)

Dwarves passing by get good thoughts from the mist of water and exploding felines.
Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

Heh, in my latest fort I have my dwarf military squads constantly in a danger room with spear traps with 10x training spears linked to a pressure plate thats contantly getting walked upon. They get to legendary in shield, fight, dodge and axe very very quickly. However the babies that get inside either through birth or getting carried die very quickly as well. Small loss though.
