Stone fall trap question
« on: April 12, 2012, 11:21:32 am »

Its my day for dumb questions... thanks for all the advice so far!

Next dumb question:  A bunch of my one shot stone fall traps now have bits of loot and evildoer remains in them.  Is there an easy way to reset the traps or should I just remove the building and rebuild?

I'm glad you asked it, I actually have all kinds of and stone-fall traps and empty cage traps I hadn't gotten around to figuring out how to reset either.

Your dwarves will automatically take a fresh stone out to the stonefall trap and reload it, provided they can reach the trap and the trap hasn't been forbidden.

The invader bodies and loot may be forbidden by default.  Un-forbid them to have them moved to a stockpile.

Cage traps will be reloaded, provided you have empty caged and idle dwarves who can reach the traps.

Annendum:
- if you accidentally/intentionally forbade the trap (either by using the (d)esignation options, or by forbidding what they are made from using (t)), they will not reload

- When an enemy dies, all of their loot is forbidden by default. There are a few ways to fix that - use (k) to look at the spot, and press (f) as you select an item to forbid/unforbid it; Or, use mass designation - press (d), and follow it from there. I can't remember the exact one...; or, use stocks to find items you want and unforbid them.

- With many traps, only dwarves with the Mechanic labour enabled will reload them

- Dwarves can and WILL try to reload traps in the middle of an invasion. Be careful.

- Consider investing in Weapon Traps as stone-fall traps quickly become ineffective. You would want metal trap components or weapons, or any material crossbows. Crossbows require bolts. You can place up to 10 weapons in each trap. Those traps can get jammed.

Thanks guys! Wish I had read the last couple of posts before the Goblin horde came swarming through my  mostly depleted trap field

I found out that (at least for cage traps) that you can 't' them and forbid the components (cage and mechanism) and they still work, with the added benefit that the "goblin cage" is already forbidden avoiding idiots dwarves trying to store the cage in a stockpile in the middle of an invading horde, I think it also avoids them going to load cage trap...

you also need an animal stock pile with free space to put the "used" cages in, its best to design a mass pitting system http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Mass_pitting. And just make that your animal stockpile.

most enemies nowadays docily follow their captors to a new cage, so you can free up the cages quite easily. Just the militia has a tendency to attack first and ask later "uh, where was this bound and stripped goblin being brought to?"

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Geneva conventions aside... does killing your captives not earn experience for the militia?

You will gain experience for every single hit you lay upon those monsters, which means that the most effective way to train is actually with wooden swords against single enemies. To avoid getting stabbed by an armed goblin you remove his weapon and shield and leave his armor on so that you get actually more experience from it.
