I have a prison cell just outside the main gate.  Death sentencees are placed there via burrow.  When the greenskins turn up, the cell is opened up.

If nothing else they soak up a few arrows that my military would otherwise have to face.  Tougher ones will significantly reduce the enemy capacity.  Vampires especially are very good for breaking axelord arms and being pincushions.

Anyone who single-handedly repels a seige is pardoned as per the obvious will of Armok.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

your spike trap needs more spikes?

My other favorite methods include stripping naked and feeding to captured cave creatures or forgotten beasts (once i had a hydra).  There's also the fun method of pitting unarmed into mass of tamed creatures (war dogs are easy for huge numbers, individually weak).  You can also use this method to give all your war tigers names or something.

I usually reserve drowning for invaders that I haven't captured with cages.

I generally save trolls for firing squads.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

In my current fort I've also chucked a goblin into the river. I had posted my single marksdwarf nearby in case the thief tried to escape. Marksdwarf ignored the thief untill he hit the water (no attempts at escaping) and then he turned the drowning goblin into a bleeding pincushion by shooting down a well.

your problem is that your pit is not deep enough. You should get something like 50 z levels deep. Ideal for repainting the walls.

There's no kill like overkill.

Still, you'll not need to make it deeper than 9/10 z lvls deep for 100% chance of killing humanoid and human sized creatures. Though a 50z lvl drop chute is always awesome.

Would also stop the miasma.

Im just worried if I hit the caverns, a FB will show up and fly out of it. Or something else that is bad will also fly through the hole.

Your fears are unwarranted! DIG DEEPER. PLAY LIKE A DWARF.

14 levels is enough to pretty much kill anything and should be possible without breaching a cavern.

Attach the spikes to a lever. If something survives set the lever to be pulled repeatedly.

While 14 levels should be enough, I usually go for 20+ to get the desired effect.

and make a statue garden there behind some glass windows so the dwarfs can watch and place bets on who splatters the most.

Anyone willing to test my 10 serrated cotton candy disc trap at the bottom of a 20 z level hole? Also, if I manage to capture a megabeast I guess I could feed it invaders. Put a bridge over a big hole and when they get to it, pull the lever and send them kicking and screaming to the abyss!

Heh, if only actual betting was implemented.
That and a randomly generated subject to bet on depending on the fort's accomedations.
Usually they should bet with coins, but if there are no coins,
other personal belongings may be used instead.
Also.. moods for the outcome of a bet.
Loosing/winning a bet should generate a negative/positive mood, which may be shown along with what was lost/won in the Dwarf's description.

That should would be a nice feature indeed.

I'm rather fond of a simple magma chamber for disposing of those pesky vampires without leaving a single shred of their existence behind. That goes for my prison, too. I'm sure that my criminals feel rather happy about their platinum chains, but they aren't there for show.

Aside from that if I feel like getting extra-fancy with a fort I go with a large, elaborate colosseum stocked with dangerous wild animals.

Urist McGambler has been unhappy lately. He has lost a bet lately. He has witnessed death lately. He has been comforted by a lovely goblin splatter lately.
