elves have tons of giant animals?
« on: April 11, 2012, 09:24:19 pm »

I've played this game for some time now.  For some reason, this embark I am on is swimming in giant animals. The elves have been bringing me all sorts of giant monsters.

I have nearly replaced dogs with giant lions for my primary food and leather supply animals, and I have managed to get breeding pairs of giant keas and giant eagles as well.  Competing for mystery meal of the week are my well established packs of giant hyenas, and giant dingos...

I am just curious if this is really as abnormal as I think it is, or if I have just been absent minded and just never noticed?

It's been present in older versions too :s

Still, you lucked out with more savage Elves.

They aren't seiging though. These are ordinary trade goods!

The subtle mod I made to the giant creature modifier raw let's giant versions of trainable creatures stay trainable, so my giant lions can be war lions.  I have over 100 of them... some with incredible muscles.

I've seen giant animals in elven caravan goods before, but not at this density.  I have been getting pairs sent together in the same caravan, and they usually bring more than 6 giants total each time.

Normally they have 1 or 2, from memory....

I think he meant "savage" as in "living in savage biomes." Savage biomes run amok with giants (especially if you mod out the horrid animal men, or make them rarer), and if there's a forest retreat on a savage biome, you can expect to get a lot more giants.

I get the same thing but I also live in savage wilds/mountain biome  and I think they aren't far away from me.

I reckon they should use some of those exotics as guards for their wagons, so they're not TOO easy to kill.

It's not "normal". Trust me, I know. It's just random. You might get tons of beautiful beasts, or you might get nothing. All depends on... well, a lot of things.

I was under the impression that giant creatures couldn't breed, but no, I think its just giant versions of vermin creatures. I asked about this after my giant hamsters weren't producing offspring. So, that giant lynx that I got off the elves COULD start a breeding population if I could only find a female.

Elves have always brought exotics (or at least as long as I've been playing) and most exotics can breed. However, as mentioned, some animals don't have reproduction added because they were vermin, or the reproduction was too strange to simulate. Examples I can think of are giant-: hamster, mantis, toad, spider. Snakes also miss the child tag.

also:
Lucky you. My elf traders are not living in a savage biome, in fact, I can't find many places in the whole world that are savage. No giant lion guard animals.

Is there a way to fix this because I want a pit full of venomous snakes.

If you mean the snake breeding, yeah. You add the missing child tag.

Because giant lion bone crafts and leather as well as giant lion roasts are very valuable (and suave and delicious). His dwarves must be very happy.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.
