I meant, I could have sworn that some guy opened HFS, had an army waiting to meet them in combat, and won...

Ooo! Several. We all had our fun ways of dealing with it one way or another :p

Surely the strength of HFS is so variable that you'll sometimes get one which is quite easy to beat with a set of axelords (if, say, the demons are humanoid, don't have any horrible abilities, are made of crappy materials, there aren't too many of them etc) and sometimes get one with demons that are literally impossible to kill in combat.

Somehow lure a giant sponge into the path of the HFS = all of them would die?

Maybe, but hot demons, demons with firebreath and demons with firey death explosions could all potentially airdrown the sponge.

And a demon with a similar bodyplan to a sponge would still not die.

Obviously the ultimate achievement is to beat HFS using no exploits. I'm not sure if this has been done yet, but it probably has.

I pulled it off once with an elaborate ballistae array and over 150 moderately skilled full steel armoured axedwarves wearing GCS silk outfits (which I think are fireproof?), many with candy weapons. There were about ten survivors, and I lost the fort to a tantrum spiral. I had 15 or so marksdwarves behind fortifications as well

I really lucked out on clown generations, though. Three or four types were made of mist/smoke/whatever and just exploded when my marksdwarves nailed em. This was before their breath attacks worked properly, too. Now, I don't think it can be done without lucky demon generation or danger rooms, and even then.... today a single demon killed my entire danger-room trained militia with fire. The challenge level is pretty variable.
