I've been putting together an AR-15 lower receiver these last few days. Lots of tiny fiddly bits, but it's fairly intuitive, and I saved $100 or $150 over buying the complete lower. I don't have the money for an upper right now, but that's the joy of the AR modularity; I can pop the finished lower in my safe pending the money for the rest.

I also finally found some .455 Webley ammo, and was able to take my lovely old Webley Mark VI to the range. It's what I expected: soft-shooting, barely louder than a supersonic .22, and hard to be very accurate with (thanks to the V-notch and post sights). Still, as a working antique that wasn't ground down to fire .45 (a travesty carried out upon so many of the Webleys in the US), it's a great things to have on the pistol shelf in the safe.

My mom is adamant that she's going to buy a .45 Colt Bisley at an estate auction next weekend because "It's a status symbol". She's not wrong, it's probably going to go for more than we can afford.

Spoiler: Pretty revolver (click to show/hide)

The engravings are nice but... Meh. I feel that the best looking sort of revolver should be black with a nice brown wooden handle.

Engravings are just sorta meh for me honestly.

See, I guess I like knowing things about guns, but I would never really want to use one. I don't think I've seen a real gun in person, even. I've seen plenty of prop guns; my dad's a director, but the closest I've ever gotten to shooting something is paintball. Then again, my stepmom's from the south, and if I really wanted to, I could go with her to visit her parents. Her dad would probably be totally up for letting me shoot something.

If you do, just try to respect it, its not a toy. Oh, and wear ear protection. Guns are loud.

I'm not really tempted to try shooting a gun, let alone holding one, but I do like hearing people go all Naked Snake level of obsession. If only because its fun and I get to learn stuff too.

It's like any hobby. It's not for everyone.

For one, it's a really stinking expensive hobby.

Theres the damn truth, i hate how my father told me all his stories how he got his guns cheap at my age its driving me nuts ::)
Thinking of building a AR-15 ground up and do a special build something of a DMR design using either the 6.5 grendel or 6.8 SPC, then i look online theres nothing still for ammo :P

Yeah, shooting just to shoot is definitely an expensive hobby, even moreso with the all the panic buying that's been going on.

Shotgun shells everywhere still. Would be a good time to start skeet shooting, the blaster packs of cheap 2 3/4" skeet shells at Wal Mart are the same price and availability they've always been.

My gun club is huge on trap, and there are apparently a lot of good sporting clays courses not far from me, but I don't have a shotgun, and I'm not willing to spend on one just yet. Hmm. That said, it looks like a Curios and Relics-eligible shotgun (i.e. pre-1963) can be had for less than $200 now, so maybe toward the end of this year.

Tellemurius, I'm actually looking at 6.5 Grendel myself—if I do go that way before you get to it, I'll let you know how it is.

I've gone skeet-shooting before, was fairly good at it. Shot my friend's .50 muzzleloader, his dad's 10 gauge shotgun, and the .45 handgun his father owned. The .50 was powerful and sexy looking, but would only really be good for show or maybe some sort of hunting. The shotgun was a shotgun, which are the best guns in the world. :P The .45 struck me as FAR louder than I ever expected it to be.

I prefer the Colt .45 Single Action Army and variants honestly. But any revolver is good. I don't care much for break-actions though.
