It's almost like plastic isn't actually a very good material to make guns out of.

Well, at least the parts actually taking the force of the bullet. That said, I wonder how carbon fiber would fare in it's place...

Carbon fiber would be really, really expensive, and could also end up too light.  I think it's used in a couple of specialist military weapons though.

I meant as in the barrel and receiver, as the plastic was. i.e. could you construct a gun out of primarily carbon fiber?

It has been used as a lower receiver i believe for ARs. I doubt the barrel

Just a note, it is designed for the barrel to be a one use design, replaced after every shot.

THere are no carbon fiber 3d printers. The goal was not to produce a plastic gun, but to produce a gun that requires no skill to manufacture.

Except those already exist. You can make one on a CNC in about three hours.

A CNC machine requires much more skill and financial investment than cheap 3d printer and downloading a gun torrent off the internet.

It wouldn't work out. Carbon fibers tend to unravel when damaged, and well weaving a gun is rather hard. (fibers are fibers after all).

You could alloy them I suppose, but well, where's the fun in that.

If we're talking about those guys who've been all over the news lately, their goal was not only to make a gun that requires no skill to produce, but would also not set off metal detectors.  Hence the plastics-and-carbon design.

Even if the gun goes through a metal detector, the cartridges won't. It's also a pity we can't print gunpowder.

The 3d printer guns are sort of a gimmick, it's too easy to make a a firearm. The main issue is ammo availability, you can't just print that out either.

People do make ammo at home, but frankly if you're using a homemade gun and homemade ammo I think the person being shot at is probably safer.
