Well, of course guns can be dangerous. So can knives, cars, even pillows. That's why you treat them carefully and not as toys.

My uncle, who owns a few guns and is the source of my firearms experience (limited as it is) taught me to be careful. He was in charge of reloads. Once a gun was loaded, it was to be kept pointed downrange at all times. When the gun is empty, or it misfires, you put it down (again, keeping it pointed away from all people) and back away from it until he can inspect it. You are not to check your targets until everyone has their guns down and safe. And for the love of Armok, don't try to fire rapidly or do fancy tricks.

Properly paranoid? I dunno about that, but I haven't seen an accident yet.

Just because they are all dangerous doesn't mean they are equally dangerous.

Don't have much of note sadly, except for a Kar98k with Turkish markings on it, and it has unfortunately been modified(At least, the wood on the barrel has been shortened) so its kinda lost its "Kar98k look"

Fires beautifully though, if a bit inaccurate for my Impossible-to-aim-guns-eyes. (Right handed but can't even bother to make an aim attempt unless I hold the gun left handed)

Being paranoid about guns isn't just natural, it's correct.  Lesson number one in my family is that a gun is most dangerous when you think it's safe.  When I got my first gun, my grandfather told me about his post at Gitmo, where they had to empty their sidearms after every shift.  These were marines who handled their sidearms constantly but they still were required to discharge their "empty" weapons into a concrete block just in case they made a mistake.  The concrete block was riddled with holes.

There is no such thing as an unloaded weapon.
There is no such thing as a safe weapon.

Aye, my grandfather, father, brother, and my cousin who adopted me are all US military, not counting my Brazilian military family members. Military or civilian, everyone who handles a weapon should treat it with deadly respect, as you'd handle an aquarium of famished piranas or an active explosive. If you do not respect the weapon, the weapon sure as hell won't respect you. EVERYONE who handles a weapon should know to remove the magazine/clip and empty the chamber after handling a weapon, and never to leave a weapon loaded, SAFETY or not. You can NEVER be too careful.

If folks were properly-trained and took care of their weapons, such things wouldn't happen. Sadly, the same as drivers and parents, not everyone is disciplined or mature enough to handle the charge put upon them. Nonetheless, I do believe it is a man's right to possess the means to defend himself, especially in a world where I see punk-ass gang members and teens toting guns on a regular basis.

Hell, I used to carry a concealed 8 1/2-inch dagger (not very wise, but hey, I was young) hidden in my overcoat with me when I was in high school, I knew how to get through my school's security checkpoints w/ metal detectors with it too. The week I moved to my old town, I was 'accosted' by nearly a dozen MS-13 gang members, and from that day forth I always had a blade on me, just in case. I almost had to use it a few times, once when I was accosted by five older men while I was with my ex-fiance, and a week later when I was once again accosted by three random black kids I went to high school with. If they hadn't known from school that I don't take shit from ghetto punks, I'd probably have been robbed and/or shot by the one who had a pistol in his waistband. Even though I have a weapon on me at all times, be it a switchblade or what-have-you(yes, the blade length is within legal limits), I nonetheless would not use it unless absolutely necessary. I might get robbed or bloody a little, but I'm not using potentially deadly force unless I'm combating someone using deadly force against me.

A gun is like a table saw; if you don't respect it and utilize discipline during handling, you're liable to get bloody out of sheer stupidity or ignorance.

Not related to guns, but to self-defense: Krav Maga has a lot of moves designed to grapple an enemy's weapon (including someone about to ram a knife into your gut and someone pointing a gun to your temple) and steal it from them, turning the tide. It's also got some rather lethal moves and is used by Israeli special forces.

My internet's failing, so I can't find pictures of it, but I love my Isreali Mauser. I looked up the markings a couple years back, and I suspect that it's one of the original 8000 sold by Czechoslovakia to the Isreali government in its first year or two of existence. Pretty sweet, I think. It's in near pristine condition for a 60 year old rifle, (although whoever stored it somewhere along the line thought "storage" meant "dip it in oil until the woodwork bleeds") and a damn delight to fire.

I also have a Mk3 Lee-enfield (rebuilt), a generic Brno .22 rifle and a few guns my grandfather left me - a lee enfield converted into a .410 shotgun, a .22 air rifle and one of those cute little single-shot .22 BSA rifles that have to be cocked by hand after every shot.

The BSA rifle reminds me of the pipe gun from fallout 2. I had to scrape the rust off to find out who the hell made it. :p

Arise, thread!

Fires beautifully though, if a bit inaccurate for my Impossible-to-aim-guns-eyes. (Right handed but can't even bother to make an aim attempt unless I hold the gun left handed)

Try safety glasses with tape over the left eye. That's worked for a couple of cross-dominant people I know.

I'll add my voice to the chorus of Mosin-Nagant recommendations, with the caveat that, although pretty much any one you find at a reputable gun store will work, you might want to see if you can look at a couple and pick the one that looks best. I didn't get to to that and lucked out with an M91/30 that shoots pretty darned straight (evidenced the fact that I, a pretty mediocre rifle shot, hit paper at all in this video). You'll almost certainly have to do some sight adjustment, though. They're also pretty bad on ergonomics, and in fun per unit dollar you'd probably be able to find a .22 of some description that's better, but the Mosin-Nagant is the cheapest historic rifle out there.

I saw that someone posted about a Lee-Enfield further up, which is probably the next one on my list. I'd love a C96 someday (the fact that it has tangent sights graduated out to a whole stinking kilometer appeals to the optimist in me), but they're almost uniformly $1500+ even for mediocre examples, and I'd probably be leery about actually shooting one.

One of these days I'm going to suggest a vintage military bolt-action iron sights rifle shoot to the sportsman's club I took that video at. I'd love to get into some not-too-competitive competition shooting.

We have one of those, it's a lot of fun.  Bring a k31 if you want to win though.

I've always wanted a Mosin, or a Luger (super expensive though from what I've seen), but I'll probably have to wait until I'm 21 anyway... Plus I need to read up on Pennsylvania's gun laws.

I think (but am not sure) that age is a federal regulation: 18 for rifles, 21 for handguns. You're also probably best off finding a local gun store that has Mosin-Nagants already-- interstate purchases have to go to a FFL holder, which is usually an added expense and  always an added hassle.

As a resident, I can say that Pennsylvania's specific laws aren't all that restrictive (barring municipality laws on firearms discharge, which you'll have to look up; on the other hand, if you're doing all your shooting at established ranges, you ought to be okay). There is one sticky point, which is that carrying a firearm in a vehicle automatically falls under the purview of concealed carry (even if you're going to and from a shooting range). My understanding is that you're okay if you keep the weapon unloaded and inaccessible from the passenger compartment (I don't have a carry permit, so I stick the guns in the trunk).

Edit: the relevant part from the PA state code, on the people the concealed carry provisions don't apply to:

Any persons engaged in target shooting with a firearm, if such persons are at or are going to or from their places of assembly or target practice and if, while going to or from their places of assembly or target practice, the firearm is not loaded.

Arise again, thread!

In the months since the last activity in this thread, I obtained my Collector of Curios and Relics FFL and almost immediately found a gun to buy: a Webley Revolver Mark VI, in the original .455, in fantastic condition, for about 60% of what comparable guns were going for. I immediately snapped it up, and it arrived today. It's a thing of beauty, a big chunky British revolver from those halcyon days of colonial adventurism, and although ammunition is 1) currently not available and 2) very expensive for handgun ammo when it is, I'm looking forward to my next range trip.

A related revolver, the Webley-Green Army model, was used by Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade, so I may have to get some appropriately adventurer-archaeologist gear and come up with a similar costume character.
