People reload ammo by reusing spent shell casings, it's less producing your own ammunition as it is assembling ammunition, the primers, casing, gunpowder and jacketed bullets are not things you can really improvise.

A homemade blackpowder muzzle loader could be a thing, but this would basically be a pipe bomb missing an endcap.

As for DIY firearms, google pipe shotgun. No point in a 3d printer gun since home depot sells everything you need to fabricate a simple firearm anyways, at a fraction of the cost.

The really hard part for full home-production ammunition would be primer chemistry. Smokeless powder isn't all that complicated to make from a garage-chemistry point of view, and with a lathe and sizing dies, some brass blocks, and a good deal of patience, a basement machinist could turn out arbitrary brass (though slowly and at great expense). Jacketed bullets can also be done homebrew. Primers could technically be done at a hobbyist level, but the issue is that primary explosives aren't easy to buy whole, so you'd have to make them, and there are two classes of priming compounds:

1) The ones for which precursor compounds are readily available, which tend to be highly toxic and more impact-sensitive than strictly desirable.
2) The nifty modern ones, which are much more suitable, but involve a lot more complicated preparatory steps to get to the final ingredients.

In a thread where the topic has turned to guns as a cottage industry, it makes sense to talk about what can and cannot be plausibly done by amateurs, doesn't it?

If you are planning to make your own ammo from scratch, again the shotgun is the best model. A cardboard tube with a cap at one end. Much more cost effective than milling whole shells out of brass.

Shotgun ammunition is much easier, but there's a smaller gulf between making a shotgun cartridge and, say, a bottlenecked rifle cartridge than there is between making any sort of cartridge and the primer to stick in the end of it. Or at least, that's my understanding of it.

I've heard of people making primers from strike-anywhere match heads, but I doubt they would be all that reliable.

Huh. Google corroborates that story, and says that those rolled-up caps from cap guns are also a possibility. The only problem is that both kitchen match heads and caps are a lot more sensitive than most priming explosives these days, which could lead to handling difficulties.

No, they're only nuts if they're obsessed with their view. How different and/or legitimate their view is is beside the point. But let's leave this line of thought and return to guns and ammo.

You had to have known you'd offend somebody when you came in here and said that. I'm sure there was no malice behind it but I doubt you weren't aware of the possible repercussions.

Has Obama actually done ANYTHING that made if more difficult to own guns?

Ignore this post.

Please sir, people get uppity about their guns. I suggest another thread to go to.

The Ammo supply is slowly returning. I've managed to get both .38 special, .22 LR and 7.62x39 in the last month.
