Hospital not restocking?
« on: April 11, 2012, 04:56:49 pm »

Ok, so I got a hospital with 3 wells and a nice reservoir underneath, 10 chests, 10 beds, and a traction bench.  All's well for the first year or so when I notice it only has about half it's stock of Soap and Powder for Casts.  So I figure what the hell, upped the max stock amount and started pumping out Lye-Tallow->Soap  and Gypsum Powder.

some time later I checked the stocks and neither soap nor Cast Powder had been added to the Hospital Stocks.  for some annoying reason all the powder was being sent to bags in my Finished Goods StockPile, and all the soap was nowhere to be found,  it would allow me to use it for building walls (which I didn't do, but used to check if there was any soap, and there was tons) so I know it was there.

I gave up after a while and still, over a year later the Hospital stocks of soap and Powder for Casts hasn't gone up at all.. can anyone tell me why?

Are your hospital containers full of other things? Try building a new container or two in the hospital zone and see what happens.

Add another coffer or two inside the hospital zone... wait a little bit... then check again.  Hospitals need something like 8 of those coffers which isn't mentioned in the wiki.

Are gypsum plaster and soap the only things that are below the required stock, for that hospital?
If not, it is very likely that dwarves are hauling threads and cloth to your hospital instead of soap and powder.

I tend to stock my hospitals in a strict order: Set all material minimums to zero. Build 2 chests, set splint miminum, wait. Build 2 chests, set crutch minimum (note that only 1 fits per chest, although other objects can be placed in that same chest), wait. Build 2 more chests, set cloth minimum, wait. Build 2 more chests, set thread minimum, wait. Build 2 more chests, set gypsum powder minimum, wait. Build some more chests, set soap minimum

This ensures all required materials are stocked into the hospital. If you build loads of chests first, before setting stock levels, dwarves will overfill the chests with cloth and threads. The amounts of materials you specify are not absolute; rather, once a cap is hit, no more new hauling jobs for that material will be generated. Any hauling jobs created before the cap was hit will still be delivered, causing overstocking, especially if you have many idlers.

And just for the record, your doctors can use materials from anywhere.  They don't have to get their supplies from the hospital's coffers.  Storing materials in the hospital only serves to make sure some things are reserved for medical purposes and don't get turned into socks, and to try to prevent doctors from having to go a long distance to retrieve them (this usually fails, though -- a Suture job gets generated while the doctor is nowhere near the hospital, so the doctor grabs a thread from the textiles stockpile instead).

and they use any thread.

"look, nifty stitches, eh?"
"adamantine?"
"Yup, doctor just grabbed the closest there was."

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

I was under the impression that cabinets worked in hospitals too, but I may be wrong, as well as "cloth" bags which can be places as containers using the designation menu. You can crank out like 25 cloth bags easy and that should be more then adequate.

Bags can be built as coffers, but I wouldn't use them for hospitals.  I'd save the good ones for nobles' rooms.  They can be a great way to boost room value (well dyed, well woven, well sewn, decorated with an image that's well dyed, well woven, etc.).

Stone coffers are way easier to crank out than bags, and generally way less valuable, unless you're making them out of platinum nuggets or something.

Haha, very true, and you are absolutely right...

But usually my cloth industry (especially now that clothes are important) is in full swing by the first pig tail season, so i tend to have less masonry shops going, my masons are usually never at the shops, and doing some kind of wall, or 'project'. Or building other shops, or finishing bridges etc... bags are always a surplus good for me.

Be careful using this design... I placed a stockpile where my dwarves then placed the hospital items then I created the hospital zone on top which caused a bug where the items were no longer recognized.  Deleting the stockpile did not help... or might have been the cause of the bug.  Anyways the only thing I could do was sell those items at the depot to the merchants.

I'm quite the opposite... my clothing industry never makes any clothes because my dwarves only wear leather OR leftovers from sieges.  Primarily I lean towards leather for their protection.  I seriously never make any clothes out of cloth, yarn or silk.... so my tailor is spending his time only sewing images.   My two or three best masons are non-stop busy for the first 5 years mainly building doors, cabinets, tables, thrones, coffins and blocks.  Wall constructions are for unimportant peasants.
