I hypothesize that it's largely due to any questions posed in the OP or on-topic discussion being dealt with swiftly, at which point onlookers become bored and begin discussing some tangential topic of discussion they spot in the thread, leading them farther and farther astray. Needs someone willing and bored enough to actually do !!SCIENCE!! on the forum itself and critically analyze threads that have been derailed...

Actually, a horse is extremely unlikely to step on a prone body.  Even in the heat of battle, trampling is uncommon.  Bulls though?  Those fuckers will stomp ALL OVER you!
