Oh thanks for making this thread,  I love reading old threads. I''ve already seen the penguin thread somewhere. Perhaps in five years there will be one person with pony avatar telling tales of ancient times when there were more like him like penguinofhonor now.

Roughly as likely as people complaining about others liking homestuck, down the line.

IE implausible.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Running back into the time when Janet was Sniper Joe is weird. And Various Nonsense, I remember when it was civil, though most people were in the upper boards then, but slowly migrating downwards towards it since DF 2010 wouldn't be released for a while. Things slowly got out of hand, too many topics, forum games and serious discussions taking place on the same page, roll to dodge migrating here from the IVAN forums, so the split was necessary. Prolly one of the best things to happen to the forums, but VN itself pretty much existed for nonsense threads at that point, hell, that was what the forum users asked for. It just became apparent that it served very little purpose, and while there were some good threads, the bad drowned it out. So it was locked, and it was still bad enough that regular users can't see it anymore, though Toady put off deleting it since some people wanted to be Archivists. Not sure if anything came from that, at that point I figured it wasn't worth the patience to go dig through the bad to find the gems.

Though heh. There was a time when we didn't even have Avatars, or a lot of the fancier features here, it was pretty bare bones. Kinda funny, This account's 4 years old, but when you get down to it, it spent three quarters of it's time down here.

I technically COULD have seen it the subforum, but never did - my first year here was mostly lurking under a different name, and I pretty much never strayed from the general DF discussion. Even after I got my proper, current account, it took me a while to migrate down.

I will now never truly know what was up with VN.

It was just like now, except with a great deal more raucous lewdness and unchill behavior.

I haven't heard about that. The subgames have always been a bit... worrying...

You know, I don't think I ever did getting around to playing environmental extremist. I might have to give it a shot.

This did cause me to notice that the subgames aren't linked from the main page any longer, but thankfully, they still exist.

They are a secret, fell and terrible. We would do well to ensure they don't fall into the wrong hands.
