I was thinking of this one too, where each order is another z level either up or down.

DF doesn't support dodecahedron shapes :P

It doesn't support triangles/tetrahedrons, either, but that's exactly why we should try.  Break free of the orthogonal oppression of your mind!

60 Degree angles = 2 up for 1 over compared to a straight line edge.

With that said, 72 degree (Or 108, depending on what you are measuring) angles are not nearly as easy...

I think it would be interesting to build a fortress like a nautilus shell. Nothing quite like getting a math fix while getting a biology fix.

That's actually what the "spiral ball" idea is all about.  A nautilus is just a one-armed spiral around a 2-dimensional axis, but the spiral ball idea involves a multi-armed spiral around a 3-dimensional axis.

I just can't find a good image of a spiral ball to show, since it seems like either nobody in geometry was interested in such an idea, or I just have no freakin' clue what it's proper name is.

The sponge is almost too easy. Now that I understand how it patterns out, I can designate entire layers some times. I have a feling that next layer will be harder though :/

Uhh, sure it does.  If you'll observe, DF also does not have tetrahedron shaped tiles, yet people have made tetrahedral 3d forts in this very thread.

You do the best fitting approximation of it, in a scale that makes your intentions sufficiently clear.  This is entirely doable, though you'd certainly have to write a computer program to lay out the blueprint in layers.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

... Oh shit, talking about dodecahedrons just gave me an idea - an icosahedron fortress with a megaproject to make it display a "1d20" number at its top when you tell it to "roll" the dice.

There would need to be a timed randomizer device on the inside of the icosohedron, and retractable bridges made of gold or silver over an entirely cast obsidian icosohedral fortress could display the number "rolled".

It's... it's so utterly nerdy. It's perfect!

Bonus:
Make all the sides display numbers when viewed from stonesense
Ultra Bonus:
Make all the numbers "roll" when you pull the lever, and no duplicate numbers!

I don't think stonesense would be able to handle a full icosohedron, unless it were too small for the numbers to show up, anyway.

Besides, I can use bridges on the top floor, but diagonals would be difficult without just using static walls.

Also, the other numbers would have to be in a set pattern - For example, all numbers must add up with the number on their opposite face to 21, just as all numbers on a 6-sided die add up with their opposite face to 7.

Touché.
