Been out of the game for a long time - thus vampire question
« on: April 10, 2012, 08:31:19 pm »

I have a large fort, and I seem to have two running around.  In what way does one diagnose a dwarf as a vampire?

The easiest way is just to flood your fort with magma. 100% effective

No vampires (or fortress) , no vampire question

There's a good chance that a migrant who doesn't list any family in their relationships page, only dwarves they met in the fortress, is a vampire.

They often, but not always, have high skills, including high social skills.

They usually have VERY good metalworking skills, so kill anyone that makes metal.

they don't get hungry, thirsty or sleepy, don't drown or flee from undead,  never have food or booze related thoughts and almost always have a took joy in slaughter.  if you can't think up a trap or two that exploits one of these diferences from normal dwarves feel free to turn your fort into obsidian getting rid of it.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

Rampant paranoia will help you make the right decisions.

Lock one in a room with two useless dwarves and a bed. Wait. You will know if they are a vampire.

All else fails, abolish all bedrooms and have everyone sleep in a tightly packed dorm which doubles as the sole meeting area in the fort. Won't prevent deaths, but will give you eye witnesses.

You can gather everyone in a room and release those who get hungry and thirsty. The two that does not get hungry will be the vampires.

You could gather everyone in a room that can be quickly filled and drained of water. Gather the entire fort there and fill the room with water and see who does not have the drowning status. This is harder to set up and dangerous if not done properly, but it will just take all your fort about one ingame day, since you wont have to wait months of in-game time for all of the suspect dwarves to start going hungry or thirsty(entire fort other than starting 7).

Probably dfwiki will have more other anti-vamp strategies.

I compare dwarf names in game versus names shown in Dwarf Therapist.  For whatever reason, DT will show a different (true name?) than the game will show.  It's easy to sort DT by migrant waves, but you'll have to go through the unit list in the game on your own.

Look for dwarves that are unnaturally good at converstions, are moving very slowly or very quickly ,and are "former members" of dozens of civilizations.
