Would this same method be possible for finding dragon caves?

It would be possible to find anything-you-want caves using this method, assuming said creature exists and lives within a site on the map.

what uses would kobolds serve? aside sadistic urges and maybe dwarven daycare, them being so small
maybe i'm just not thinking hard enough..

Question: The kobolds on your screenshot are all marked as 'friendly'. Are they actually friendly? Can you interact with them in nonlethal ways? Use them as pets, livestock? So many more possibilities if they don't try to attack your dwarfs on sight.

now, the question is:
to embark with just kobolds, or where kobolds and a cave dragon are in the same cave?

Cave dragons occur all over the world.  They're normal wildlife.

That happens with named creatures, they're always "outcasts".  An adventurer may be sent to kill it.

It likely did something to make itself a historical figure and took up a lair. But yes, cave dragons are a wild animal that can be encountered in caverns.

Also, making this search method a public announcement was a good idea. I've used similar methods to find kobold caves before, but mostly relying on biome and site maps and the legends mode historical maps to find kobold civs. Easier with the option to make caves visible turned on, but the relative elevation map can reveal the location of a cave because it will appear as a small mound on flat terrain. If not, then you can always just embark haphazardly and forceclose DF until you find it and embark exactly how you want to.

There are plenty of fun things that can be found in caves, most of them are simply historical figures, but that's nice to have in its own right, who wouldn't want to embark alongside a Roc which tears your seven dwarves to unrecognisable pieces in two point five seconds?

Another thing you could do is mod kobolds to keep animals, then they'd have all kinds of critters alongside them.

Built a massive fortress for the Kobolds, fill it with phat lewt, abandon, and bring an adventurer hostile towards their civ to the site.

WHARBLGRBLLL!!

had a female kobold tamed, built a nest box, had the door locked and she sits on the box, lays 2 eggs and before I can forbid them, another (uncaptured) kobold walks in through the door, opening it, and my dwarves grab the eggs :<
