just embarked, 248 kobolds in sight?

i just found what i thought was the perfect 4x4 area, volcano in one corner, a cave in another, plenty of metals, fire clay and sand spotted.

i embark, and look around.. the outside of the cave is completely littered with goods, gems, and.. uh..
unit list other: 248, all kobolds
various professions on a lot of them..

what the...?

can i actually play on this spot?

i'm not too optimistic about starting a fortress with an army of kobolds in plain sight...

Yep, you can play here. Congratulations - you've found a rare kobold lair. If you can get them to fight other invading kobolds they'll take sides - might even wipe themselves out. Just think of them as pets. Sort of.

Don't worry, they probably won't cause you too much trouble. Just don't let any of your dwarves become enemies of their civilization by attacking/being attacked by their thieves and ambushers, or let the kobolds kill each other for that matter. A dual-civilization loyalty cascade would be a horrific yet awe-inspiring sight!

also dont bother about trying to claim any of the junk laying around. 99.9% is going to be worthless good that you can churn out in no time in any case.

Nah, just have the entrance to the fort go through the caves, but have two levels of kobold detection. One, at the entrance of the cave itself, so that the kobolds don't engage each other. Secondly at the entrance of the fort proper, to prevent the kobolds of the cave sneaking in.

Also, the kobolds should soak up sieges well. With those numbers, they'll take a lot down with them.

Build a wall around them, Kobold reserve. Patrol the walls against egg poachers and KodKod. They are an endangered species.

Yeah... 248 kobolds is something to be concerned about.

I agree thoguh with walling them in with you. They'd make an excellent distraction for invaders, and having some decent neighbors is always good.

I had a lovely image in my head of a bunch of dwarves dressed like this chap:

With crossbows at the ready, riding on the backs of war elephants, gunning down the kobolds as they flee. It would be beautiful. Of course they could always try to fight back, but they'd just end up impaled on the tusks of the viscious murderbeasts that we know elephants can be.

Precisely. Once they're extinct you no longer have to worry about elf-like efforts to preserve them, or any of that nonsense. Blood for the blood god, eh what?

What are the breeding rates on kobolds?  I'm imagining stupendously high.  They could definitely be a renewable anti-siege mechanism (maybe try and use them as a "moat").
