I had a lovely image in my head of a bunch of dwarves dressed like this chap:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A hunter from the untamed wilds
Made quick work of that Kobold child.

I put together a two-person marksdwarf squad and sent them to stand *near* the river, without crossing it, hoping they'd shoot down at the goblins. Didn't work; one marksdwarf went to the side of the river, spotted the two goblins still alive, and jumped right in, whereupon he was killed by the dingos. Goblins eventually died, too, but the dingos are still hanging out. They've been down there about two years.

What are the breeding rates on kobolds?  I'm imagining stupendously high.  They could definitely be a renewable anti-siege mechanism (maybe try and use them as a "moat").

I believe they lay eggs, so wild ones can't breed.

You know what I'm wondering?
What the heck are Kobolds.
From what I've seen of the community, they look like small Dog/Rat/Dragon people.
And they of course lay eggs.
Are they like platypi or something?

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

They're from german folklore; basically like elves and most other fairies; ambivalent most of the time, but easily angered. Apparently the element cobalt was named for them, since miners blamed kobolds for how difficult the ores were to work with. They could also apparently materialise in the forms of either an animal, a human, a candle or a fire, so presumably they're also responsible for catsplosions. They were popularised I think its fair to say by D&D.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobold

As to whether they're dangerous; last time I embarked on a kobold site the overwhelming majority were utterly harmless; unarmed, friendly, and willing to remain friendly until you attacked them personally. (i.e., they wouldn't act to protect other kobolds.) Watch out though; I had a thief spawn with them as well, who was armed. He was initially friendly, but became hostile when I attacked another kobold, and promptly killed off six of my seven dorfs, including three at once. The seventh dwarf killed him and then amassed some three-hundred kobold kills to his name though :D

Also, the kobold cave for me led down into the caverns (which were full of even more kobolds) so you might want to keep an eye out in case something wanders up from there. Tbh, if you don't mind your units list being spammed by kobolds, I'd just steal all their stuff and leave them, unless you want to use them to level up your military.

They don't have beaks, so not a platypus.

They sound like a monotreme, like an echidna though.  This means they produce milk, lay eggs, but lack nipples.

Just build nest boxes in their little hidey-hole, then wall them in with a floodgate to enable invaders on occasion.

Sit back and watch the cutesplosion.

What I would do (due to having modified ethics raws) is build a wall around them, undermine it the layer below, add a bunch of grates in the floor

Then fill the lower layer with water and rig up some lignite bins.

Build around 20 butcher shops and appropriate tanneries and kitchens and enable the labors for all the dwarves, and then start preparing some salted steamed kobold roasts to last the next 10 years.

Though actually I think steam doesn't hurt you anymore, but something like that.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Just use them as a source of eggs.

Nest boxes, and innate dwarfiness.  You will be swimming in kobold infanticide roasts before you know it.

i just found what i thought was the perfect 4x4 area, volcano in one corner, a cave in another, plenty of metals, fire clay and sand spotted.

i embark, and look around.. the outside of the cave is completely littered with goods, gems, and.. uh..
unit list other: 248, all kobolds
various professions on a lot of them..

what the...?

can i actually play on this spot?

i'm not too optimistic about starting a fortress with an army of kobolds in plain sight...

In the words of the Dwarven King: Jackpot.

I think you should defiinitely herd them into a moat as siege bait. Or you could build a hive-like structure completely encased away from the rest of your fort below ground and put them all into it, occasionally dropping fresh migrant sacrifices to the little scamps.

If adamantine is perfectly rigid, as shown by having 0 strain at fracture in the raw files, then the speed of sound in the metal approaches the speed of light. Adamantine musical instruments would produce ultrasonic vibrations, and cut off the fingers of the musician.

According to the raws, kobold are small brown-skinned egg-laying humanoid creatures with glowing yellow eyes.

Having 250 kobolds...

More if you allow them to breed...

Your FPS must be devastating.
