Mine carts, logic circuits, death-traps and other fun.
« on: April 09, 2012, 11:36:23 pm »

Reading up on Toadyone's explanations of how mine-carts will work, it sounds like we've got a new computing tool in DF. It can carry weight, hit pressure plates(which can be set by weight), gain speed from gravity, be timed for start on fullness or time, have friction stops, be sped up by rollers,  and slowed down by up ramps.  All in all, they seem to be a perfect carrier device, especially with the correct bridge/pressure plate setups to carry data. Change-able data, movable data, re-pathed data, and even dwarf reliant (for filling up the carts) data. So in other words, a revolution in DF computing is on its way.

Do you think this will be better, worse, or just weirder than the current water fed computers of today?

And on more practical matters, can we fill carts with magma? If only to have them hurtle down a hill, crashing into other carts, spewing their molten death over any unfortunate goblins and elves in the area. I guess you could make a magma weighted computer, for dwarfiness sake, but the killy option sounds more fun. More !Fun! even.

What other thing are people hoping for from carts in the next version? Or bugs that they're hoping get made into features with them? We could use them for hauling as well I guess, but yeah, whatever. Lets work out how to weaponize or needlessly complicate them in a pointless fashion first.

Forever burning mood-artifact lignite carts of death is what I'm hoping for.

Also, we have yet to find out the power requirements of the "speed-up" rollers. It could be another revolution in dwarven physics. For many years the perpetual water reactor has been a mainstay of many fortresses, pumping out well over 100% efficiency forever. Now linked up with a cart system, we should be able to transfer that power into the kinetics field, providing both above parity power generation coupled with perpetual motion exceeding gravitational constraints.

Indeed my good dwarves, if we so willed it, we could go to the moon in a mine cart.

I really hope both liquids and creatures can be placed in mine carts. One for its normal destructive uses, the other so we can have the funkiest damn roller-coaster rides ever devised. Up the mountain, through the air, across the canyon, past the goblin cages and then straight down to god-damned hell and back. You must be this short to ride.
