I got a wave of 43 migrants yesterday as the 3rd wave with 13 dwarfs before they arrived. Couldn't produce enough jobs in time so they just partied and made friends. Just wait till my first dwarf dies they'll all start killing each other or something...

I run industrial forts with children modded to grow up much earlier, so I never find myself hating migrants. Not having enough beds (and other supplies) when the population triples is the exception rather than the norm. Something is wrong if I haven't set up a magma industry by 1st summer that's just waiting for extra labour to operate. When I get FPS death, it's my own damn fault for insisting on producing lots of items as that's how I enjoy DF.

It would be neat if one could set up "castes" in-game. Perhaps certain administrative/noble jobs would promote or require a dwarf to be of a particular caste, the "standard" caste would allow most regular labors, and a "slave" caste would permit us overseers to assign workers to the "haul things and be naked and eat raw mushrooms instead of roasts," perhaps balling all of those negative thoughts into a single moderately bad "wishes he could move up in society" thought. I can't say I've put much thought into the idea, but since I already have a large "apprentice" labor group for extra dwarves, having a bit of extra control over what they do and how they behave might be nice. Plus, it could make nobles/administrators even more obnoxious than they already are.
You need to look at the modding sub-forum, specifically the Genesis mod and perhaps the Corrosion mod. Now if you meant being able to dictate which dwarf is in which caste, then you're out of luck. I gotta say I love the 'medic' caste for being forced to have ideal personalities for doctors.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Useless. It really feels like the mountainhome is dumping it's less useful dwarves to your fortress.

Also, they drink booze, make friends, become mayors, die randomly and make tantrum spirals.

Though around one migrant on five is actually useful.

Case in point: Family of five. Momma is thresher, 3 children, daddy is peasant/very strong/very tough/agile skilled axedwarf.

Due to the fact I have not had a fort go past year 2, I have not had the pleasure to learn how to hats migrants yet, since I don't find it hard to build just a couple more beds and some more tables/chairs for the meeting hall. It's definetly worth having more slaves to work on stuff, that's for sure.

I don't hate them (completely....) but I do hate how uncontrolled they are.  It would be really nice if the outpost liaison would ask you "How many migrants would you like this season?"  You tell him how many you want and he'll tell the mountain home.  Say you tell him "I want 5" the mountain home would send around 4-6 migrants, you still have no control over the migrant's skills, but at least you could tell them "Do not send me any migrants this season." [/rough idea]

sounds realistic. I mean, the jobless or lower class dwarfs are more likely to seek their fortunes in an out in the sticks outpost than a well respected grand master craftsman.

Their useless skills are most annoying. No natural carpenters, no masons, no metalworkers at all. Seems like you only get the typical 'migrant cliche' migrants: those that are useless otherwhere are moving to YOU.

But well, reassigning and training them up from scratch is something nice too. Now I just have to get that architect to legendary.

At least, some are !!fun!! too. Migrant wave appearing, they settle down in the meeting hall and not even 5 seconds later: 'Urist McNewArrival throws a tantrum'. Great! Just arrived and ... well. Locked him away, I've never seen unskilled fresh assigned masons work so fast.

When building aboveground, migrants come five times faster than I can house.

One hunter, one cheesemaker, 62 children. Population after migrant wave: 14 adults, 68 children. That's why.

this is true. but its also less likely that the resource challenged would be able to make a long journey without knowing if there was work for them

or maybe thats just me not thinking adventurous

I'm pretty sure that's how europeans settled in america. It wasn't the rich going there, it was either hopeless and poor, or craftsmen send there by the rich, but the last one would be an exception to the rule. If you could influence it a bit, like having a recruitment noble, and send him pricy items to entice more skilled people, but if you don't he'll send you the first 10 to show up at his door in the mountainhomes.

I find migrants to be frustrating but even more-so because the max pop tag doesn't seem to work well.  I set mine to 25 and I still have about 80 people in my fort with at least 2 or 3 waves coming after I was already at 25.

Also, I always completely close off my forts to the outside and go self-sufficient underground.  I lost a fort to unhappiness cascade because the migrants of course would arrive and get slaughtered to goblin sieges outside the base, the dwarves inside would become mad because their friends had died.  Friends???  You've never met them!  Your 10 levels underground and as far as you know, they never existed!

I wish they didn't "join" the fort until they made it to a meeting area instead of joining the second they appear on the map.

I'd rather just completely turn off migrants and possibly even trading at this point.

This happens if you have been playing a while since world gen.  Migrants are drawn from the world gen population now, and children stop being born when world gen stops.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.
