because tin was closest to him and you didn't use a burrow to force him to make something awesome

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Perhaps he didn't like the "PING!" Sound that steel and iron hammers make, and instead wanted a "plunk!" Hammer?

Perhaps he likes to induce chemical poisoning in his victims as well as blunt force trauma?

Is it really possible to understand why dwarves do the things they do?

At least it's not adamantine.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

It's even better when you forbid the other workshops and send him to the artifact creation area(tm) and he makes a candy warhammer. Some people deserve getting beaten to death with their own artifacts.

Thikut has been happy lately.  He successfully trolled his overseer.

You can forbid items inside the workshop (show items in workshops: t) that they gather for the mood if you dislike the material. That way you can have like 2-3 tiles of awesome material bar stockpiles next to your smith. The moody dwarf will go gather new ones.

Though sometimes you can have bad luck and they only use like 1 or 2 bars or the material (you cant stop him when he has started building) you want them to use is far away from the workshop, but this is bad planning in its own.

One strange thing that happened during my armorsmith mood was that he only used 1 adamintine wafer to make a breastplate.. normally its six. I was worried he was making a single boot or a gauntlet, and then he churns out a 900 000 ¤ breastplate. It's description is lame though, only says its studded with adamantine.

Was it your first artifact for that fort? Those have a tendency to be on the lean side.

He does it to help his overseer understand how to crop and resize pictures.

Textbook example of sarcasm. +1 «*giant cave spider silk sock*» to you, ma'am.

Also, I'll see the OP's tin hammer and raise a candy fluff earring.
The hammer, at least, can be mounted in a weapon trap in a busy location to give happy thoughts to all the Urists toiling away on their daily quota of  -granite piccolo-s and whatnot. Candy artifact crafts, on the other hand, are the epitome of useless.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

...That's not sarcasm :d

On the bright side, I imagine the sound produced by the tin hammer striking say... A bronze statue would be very loud. Might even be, a magical statute.

Any artifact you can build into something for happy thoughts and room value is a good one. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to store my fourth artifact toy.
