The Internet is Insane
« on: April 09, 2012, 03:59:19 pm »

The internet is practically an eldritch location.

Let's see how many coincidences there are with it and fictional ones...

  • Doesn't exist physically? (As in, a place you could walk into) Yes.
  • Changes the 'sanity level' of people by mere contact? Yes.
  • Has its own laws of 'physics' that most people can't understand? Yes.
  • Full of eldritch monster level creepiness? Yes.
  • Extremely fast communication with peoplethat it would take months to talk to in the real world? Yes.

Anyone have anything for or against it?

Cegorach is Cegorach.

Nice guy. A bit too clever for his own good, but his private database is an awesome treasure trove

-Legions of many can become one unified being and identify as such, and like rain and sand, take down colossal structures just by sheer overwhelming force and numbers, and a divine wind of motivation.
-Such things can also be faceless masses composed entirely of people and machines, regardless of origins.
-It has a way of undoing the curse of multiple languages (relatively speaking) by instantly translating foreign languages into our own, thereby making it no longer a limit.
-It can be Heaven or Hell, depending on your active perception and experience, as well as how seriously you take it.
-Even those without friends can make many acquaintances, and yet not exist in physical form, but have voice.
-The innermost desires of people can be picked up without knowing them personally first.
-It can easily corrupt or enlighten anyone or anything that comes into contact with it, and anything created and distributed through it; depending on their intent and methods.

Sure, the internet is an insane eldritch god created by man; but it is also one of mankind's greatest achievements since the creation of alcohol as a recreational elixer, as well as space travel.

anything for...it?

The internet is the physical manifestation of humanity's progression towards unified consciousness. Some races develop telepathy as a stepping stone to oneness. The human race has chosen to use a technological medium for this process.

-Legions of many can become one unified being and identify as such, and like rain and sand,
take down colossal structures just by sheer overwhelming force and numbers

...or by sufficient commun-ication. When you stub your toe, cells die. The pain of those deaths is relayed to the rest of your body in immediate and visceral manner. You are not your toe. Your brain is not your toe. Yet you do not perceive the pain in your toe as pain being experienced by an external "other."

A thousand years ago people on different continents had very little knowledge of one another. A handwritten letter containing only words might take weeks or months to be received. Speed and quality of communication was poor. Now, people on different continents can see and hear one another in seconds or minutes. What happens when the speed and quality of that communication is such that humans instantly know and feel the thoughts and emotions of humans worldwide? At what point do the toe, nervous system and brain cease to be separate creatures and become one being? At what point will the human race become one being?

The internet is merely a physical manifestation of this process.
