Imagine going back in time to try and explain to people how you can talk to someone thousands of miles away instantaneously, they'll probably tie you up on a stick and burn you. Now those people who are trying to set you ablaze are insane.

I think though, you've left out that the internet is also nearly everywhere you can get to, and can control just about everything it touches.
Or the flip side of many are one, one can be many, hense the epigram that everyone else on the internet is just one big fat guy.

End note, dont take drugs; and dont think about the internet while on drugs.
